The forest was dark, with the wind whispering in the trees. The silence was broken by the rapid sounds of horse hooves.
The rider was a man wrapped in a billowing black cloak urging the horse on faster with one hand while the other held the precious bundle in his arms securely. He heard the shouts behind him as his pursuers drew ever closer. A flick of his head branches and vines with thorns all sharp enough to pierce skin grew behind him, catching his chasers unaware.
He neared his destination and slowed the horse, leaping off and holding the bundle closer to him. He looked at the doorway made of twisting tree limbs. Touching it to activate the magic that would lead him to the mortal realm. Before walking through, he snapped his fingers setting fire to the doorway. It would burn to ash after he stepped through so none could follow after him.
One of his pursuers yelled "You can't hide the girl forever. Someday she will belong to the darkness. We will FIND HER, ROBIN."
The man, Robin, didn't pause at the yelling, walking through the doorway into the mortal world. The doorway turned to ash behind him. As an inhuman scream of fury echoed throughout the dark forest.
Breathing in the cold air of the mortal world, Robin's shoulders sagged as he looked at the precious bundle in his arms. The baby slept peacefully, dark hair already covered her head, her eyes were shut hiding the emerald colored eyes that resembled his Lord's, the baby's father, perfectly.
Robin fell to his knees hugging the child to him, tears fell from his eyes onto the babes face. Tears he shed for his friends, family, for the child's parents, his Lord and Lady and best friends. He did not know if any of them had survived the attack.
All he knew is that he must raise and protect this child, so when the time came she would be ready for the hardships to come.
The babe stirred in his arms waking from his tears looking at him with her big eyes and giggling raising her hands to his face. Robin smiled at the babe the perfect combination of her parents. He fumbled with his cloak reaching into the pocket, pulling a small book with a red leather cover and gold lettering on the front cover. Placing it on the child saying gently "Your Mother wanted you to have this, she thought it will help you for when you return to the world you belong too."
He caressed her face, as the baby smiled and gripped the book, smiling "She also gave you a name, She named you Sarah."
Sarah giggled up at Robin, still clutching the book in her tiny hands. Robin rose from the ground and began to walk, going in a direction that would lead him to his new life amongst the mortal men.
Moonlight filtered through the trees that surrounded him reflecting off the title of the book. The title read The Labyrinth.
