Chapter TwoCavera
Cavera sits down on the roof she had just climbed onto. She opened her brown sack that she had been carrying with her for the past six years. She lays her bed down. It was a piece of fabric roughly stitched into a rectangular pad that was filled with sheep wool. Next to it she sets a wooden staff with intricate carvings and letters engraved into it. She reaches further in and grabbed a piece of small fabric covered in small stitches making up a lumpy picture of half of a palace. She grabbed a needle and a spool of red thread and started stitching. Five minutes later she found her stomach growling hungrily. Cavera jumps down from the room and makes her way down the deserted alleyway. The alley opens up to reveal a large dirt street bustling with traders and city folk.
"Jewels for you?" A man with wandering eyes and an uncombed beard says with a greedy smile as he holds out a necklace sparkling with green and blue gems.
"Uh, no." Cavera answers as she races to get away from the man. She turns and joins a group of twenty or so people going the opposite direction. She walks down the street eyeing a vendor selling bread. The lady behind it glares back at her and she puts her head down as a man wearing a dark navy blue uniform passes scanning the crowd. He works for the Opoz, Official Police Of Zeyjour. Really all they do is take stray kids and people with no homes and put them in prison. She passes a cart full of fruit and loaves of bread. The man behind it is bartering with a woman who has two boys at her feet. As the owner looks away Cavera snatches a loaf of bread and a mango from the stand. The man turns and grabs her wrist tightly.
"You thieve!" He shouts angrily, "I will turn you in!" The woman looks on with an interested look on her face. Cavera sends her a pleading look.
"She's mine," The woman says to the man, "She was just getting what I wanted." The owner looks back at the woman, his grimy hands still holding Cavera tightly.
"I thought you wanted apples?" He says looking confusedly back and forth between Cavera and the shopper.
"That too, I want both." She says and pays the man.
"Come with me while he can see." She whispers to Cavera as she and her sons walk off. Cavera follows gratefully. When they've turned a corner the woman stops.
"I've never had someone help me before." Cavera says. She tries to hand the bread and mango to the lady but she refuses.
"No those are for you, I was once like you, this is the least I can do." The woman says. Shocked, Cavera thanks her more than five times before the woman leaves. Cavera makes her way back to the dark red house she had put her belongings on. And climbs nimbly up the side onto the roof. She sits on her pad and rips a chunk of bread off of the loaf. She stuffs it into her mouth and greedily takes another bite. She stares into the slowly fading sun over the city of Litalie. Cavera lies down on her bed and sighs, remembering the day she left Hisung. She was just five but she was so devastated she ran away from the palace. She stowed away in the ships going to drop goods off at Zeyjor and traveled ending up at Litalie. The sound of a trumpet brakes through Cavera's thoughts. She stands up and looks over at the main street. A group of Zeyjorin soldiers were marching down the dirt road leaving puffs of dust floating in the air behind them.
"Five days ago our friends from Cato isles were raided," A tall soldier in the front of the line hollard into the sunset, " Only three children escaped to tell what happened."
Cavera scanned the line of army officials and saw three kids in the middle shivering. One is a small boy who looks like he was six, wearing just pants and a necklace of string, animal bones, and feathers. Another is a small toddler girl with a grass skirt and a shirt with small sleeves made from leaves, being held by an older girl who looked almost the same age as Cavera. The girl had long dark wavy hair curling down her back and her skin was a warm brown. She is wearing similar clothing to the other girl's but wears a necklace like the young boy.
