Secret War

Chapter 1

Kaylin

Kaylin jumped down the steps of the bright red school bus. It was bright red because three years ago some kid vandalized it with a bunch of red paint and the school had just been painted red and the school had a bunch of extra so they painted it completely red. Kaylin waved to her second best friend Aviria and linked arms with Hope, her best friend and next door neighbor. A group of other 7th grade girls shoved past them causing them to unlink.

"Hey-" Kaylin started but cut off when she realised who the girls were. Rayanna and Caisy. She thought in disgust. In the middle of the big group two girls were laughing and acting "Cool". Their blonde hair shone in the bright sunlight. Kaylin glanced down at her dirty red hair and sighed.

"Why are they the most popular girls? They're so mean!" Hope said pronouncing "They" as she would pronounce "Poop".

"I don't know. Want to come over to my house?" Kaylin asked as they rounded their street corner.

"Uh... Sorry my parents are making me go to this thing at our church. It's pretty much just learning about how teens act, Ugh I wish I could go to your house instead! My parents are making me wear a dress, on a Thursday!" Hope answered sighing dramatically in between sentences.

"That sucks." Kaylin said. Sucks for me too, She thought, Now I have to stay home with Matthew and Elliot. Ughhhhh.

"Well bye, hopefully i'll survive this" Hope was saying. Kaylin waved and called after her, "Have hope, Hope!" They both laughed. This was a bad dad joke that Hope's dad said when Hope was struggling on something and it had kind of caught on. Kaylin opened the bright yellow front door of her house. She stepped inside and threw her backpack and orange sneakers in the entryway closet. She raced downstairs hoping to beat Matthew, her eighth grade brother, to the TV to choose the show. Kaylin didn't have to compete with Elliot, her fifth grade brother, because his bus was always late because the driver always insisted on being last out of the school parking lot. Mr.Tevin probably meant it to be nice to everyone else but Kaylin was glad she wasn't on his bus. She ran towards the basement couch and found Matthew sitting and smirking in the best seat tossing the TV remote up and down in his palm.

"Ha, Ha, Ha." He said each time the remote hit his palm. "Alright Kaylin I'll be nice," Nice? I didn't even know he knew that word. Kaylin thought jokingly as she reached meaningfully towards the remote. Matthews hand jerked away and his smile widened.

"Oh no, not that kind of nice, you can choose, Avengers or Marvel?" He asked as though she would actually care.

"You're so mean!" Kaylin yelled. Just then Elliot came bouncing down the stairs.

"Can we pleeeeeease watch Pokemon?" He begged.

"No!" Kaylin and Matthew hollerd in unison.

"I'm going to tell mom!" Elliot cried

"Don't! You know she hates it when we fight!" Kaylin tried to stop him but it was too late. Kaylin heard her mothers footsteps and saw her blue jeans coming down the stairs.

"Are you fighting again?" Her sad disappointed voice asked. Her eyes were tired looking and had wrinkles around them. Kaylin could tell she hadn't gotten much sleep.

"Uh...." Kaylin didn't want to lie but she also didn't want to tell her mom yes.

"I thought you all said yesterday that you would stop. I'm disappointed in you all." She glared sternly at each of them in turn, "No TV time today." All three kids groaned but didn't argue. Their mom walked back up the stairs to her room where she was probably sitting on her bed editing boring Non-fiction books. That was their moms job, she was an editor. She worked when she wanted and was able to stay home all day. Their dad was an Architect and worked on designing buildings in the city. Kayli's stomach churned, she wanted to put the blame on her brothers but she knew it was her too. She left without saying a word. She felt her brother's eyes on her back as she stepped up past the last step. She went to her room, grabbed a pair of bright red flip flops with pineapples on them, and slipped outside. She headed to the big oak tree in her front yard and climbed up onto the lowest branches. She was about twenty feet in the air when she stopped climbing. Kaylin settled into her favorite spot in the tree and reached for a large box nestled in the crook of a branch. She opened it and brought out a green pen and a few sheets of blank paper. She had left the box up there when she last came because she found she drew and wrote the best thing when she sat alone on her branch. Luckily none of the other girls from school but Hope lived near enough to see her climb into her tree because if they did Kaylin would be too embarrassed to climb it. She thought about how much she got ticked off by her annoying brothers and how she could get Matthew back for taking the remote. She was annoyed with Elliot too because last week he had borrowed her favorite pen and hadn't returned it.
