I opened my eyes and saw blue. Chemical on-tv style blue. There were faint ripples and I realised I was at the pool. But I wasn't in a costume. There was no one here but me and whoever was splashing about at the other end. Why would I hallucinate myself at the pool?
And where was everyone? Surely there were classes using the pool or something.
I got to my feet, my eyes searching for my bag. But just as I spied it near the lockers, my body locked into place. No. Not again.
The figure swimming was more like a seal. Or a great shark coming towards me. I was sitting on my seat, although I didn't remember sitting back down. That terrifying wolf-from-red-riding-hood grin was on my face again.
A girl's face rose from the water and she pulled herself out of the water. She took off her goggles and shook out her hair. To my shock, the droplets of water became diamonds glimmering in the air like fireflies.
What?! They were artistic, as if drawn.
Jenny Taylor smiled at me, looking lovely despite being underwater moments ago.
"I just love swimming." She said sweetly. "It's why I came here."
She sat down beside me and I wanted to tell her to shoo. She'd drench me. And I needed the nurse desperately.
"That's great," I found myself saying. Ugh. "I wish I was good at something like this."
Excusez moi? I'm a good swimmer. What a load of garbage. Why was I saying this crap?
"Everyone has something they're good at," she said. Seriously, what was this conversation?
"Jenny."
The voice boomed, coming from the beside the lockers. Lucas walked towards us, his eyes on Jenny. Oh for goodness sake, what was he doing here again?
Jenny went pale, her smile vanishing.
"Lucas, what are you doing here?" she asked meekly. I still couldn't move. My smile had become less terrifying since Lucas came in.
"Did I say you could use this pool?" he demanded.
I was already sick of Lucas. He could go back to abroad, wherever that was. And why was I even here?
"I.." Jenny's eyes were shiny. "I don't have to ask for your permission."
Lucas went completely still and his eyes were wide. It was as if Jenny had announced a bomb was going off. His eyes travelled over her body and my mind was screaming stalker.
"You're going to regret saying that," he warned her. Oh please. "You're going to have to convince me if you want to use the pool."
Jenny bit her lip. Now if that wasn't some Twilight crap I didn't know what was. Her mouth was an attractive pout and her hair was perfect, even covered in chlorine water.
"The pool is for everyone," she responded.
Lucas gave her his best cool guy look.
"No, it's not. You can start convincing me tomorrow, Bookworm." She flushed at the nickname, as if he'd used it before. "I'm giving you one day."
I was thoroughly sick of whatever this was.
Suddenly, I could move my body again. Thank god.
"Ah!" I shouted and Jenny stared at me.
"What's wrong, Bea?" she asked anxiously. Lucas stared at me too.
"I have no idea what's going on but can you two keep me out of your relationship drama?" I snapped. Jenny's mouth opened. "And it's Beatrice."
