I paced in my room, surprised my feet didn't make permanent marks on the floor. I raised a finger to my lips. Nathan had kissed me. And it had felt....right. But also wrong.
Even as he kissed me, I felt alive. Electricity arced through my body when I was close to him. At least, that's what it felt like. It was right. I buried my fingers in Rowan's red hair as I kissed him back.
I sighed, chasing away the new memory. I needed comfort food. At this rate, I was going to end up the new main character. Who needed love triangles? It only gave me a headache.
I crept downstairs, wondering if my father was asleep yet. The kitchen was dark, the buzzing of the fridge the only sound. I really hoped there was chocolate hidden away somewhere. Or even better, Nutella! I opened the fridge, hoping....and there was nothing.
"Looking for something, Bea?"
I yelped, jumping up in the air in fright. My father was leaning against the wall casually as if he'd been there all along. He was dressed in fancy pyjamas with monograms on them. Were we a fancy family? I didn't think so.
"You nearly gave me a heart attack!" I replied. "And I was only looking for chocolate, as always."
He chuckled.
"Try the cupboard on the left."
I checked, and lord have mercy there was a bar of chocolate! White chocolate, but I would take what I could get.
"Thank you very much. You've made my night!" I said.
"Is there a reason you're still awake?" he asked, giving me a piercing look. "You don't normally skulk around late unless something is bothering you."
I sighed, plopping myself down at the kitchen table. Neither of us turned on the light. For some reason, it was easier to talk like this in the dark.
"I...eh...." How could a girl talk to her Dad about these things? "I'm just having boy...issues."
"As in you like someone and they don't like you back?" he asked.
I raised a brow, wondering why that was where his thoughts instantly went.
"I'm trying not to be offended that you think I'm the girl pining after a stupid guy," I said. "And no, it's the other way round. There's someone who likes me....and I also have...history...with another person. I feel guilty about seeing the first guy but there's no future with the other person. At least, not here."
My father frowned, lost in thought for a moment. I took that time to rip into the chocolate. Oh, it was so sweet! It almost erased my thoughts about Nathan and Rowan. Almost.
"Bea, when I met your mother I also had other women interested in me. I was seeing someone causally at the time." I mimed vomiting and he smiled. "But...even though we were from different worlds, I just knew it was right. We just clicked perfectly."
I scowled, thinking about my mother.
"I didn't know you were from different worlds?" I asked. "And what if...I don't know what feels right? What if I'm confused?"
"Hmm," he said. "Then just take it slowly and wait until you know which person feels right. Trust me, you'll know. Just don't commit to anything you're not sure of."
I nodded, feeling slightly calmer. I couldn't run into something with Nathan...without knowing what was right.
"Thanks Dad, I feel better now," I said, rising out of the chair and yawning. "Think I'm ready for bed."
"Good night, Bea," he replied, giving me a small hug.
"Good night, Dad."
