Book 1: Chapter 1.

Rebecca:

Humans were creatures of habit, and Rebecca was acutely aware of the power of routine. It explained why her sister, without fail, rose every morning at six a.m., even on her days off, to savor a cup of coffee and embark on a refreshing run. In stark contrast, Rebecca defied predictability. She never adhered to placing her keys on the designated rack, leading to a daily ritual of searching for them, consuming fifteen precious minutes in the morning scramble.

Rebecca Croce embodied the essence of a fly-by-the-seat-of-her-pants personality. Her Nanna consistently claimed that Rebecca and her sister Samantha were polar opposites. Rebecca, with her untamed spirit, embraced a carefree and adventurous approach to life. Spontaneous trips to the store, characterized by the indulgence in excess of sweets, and impromptu late-night movie marathons were regular occurrences in her world.

In stark contrast to her twin sister, Samantha, who was the embodiment of order and precision. A devoted adherent to her meticulously crafted lists, Sam rarely deviated from her planned course of action. Despite these inherent differences, the bond between the two sisters was unbreakable, a testament to the unique closeness that only twins could share.

Rebecca felt the pressing need to call her sister; their conversations had become scarce in the past few months amidst her ongoing settling-in process. Charming, California, had become her new home merely six months ago, a decision that sparked a disagreement with Samantha, who insisted she return to Tacoma. Rebecca, however, was on a quest to find her elusive forever place.

Rebecca's journey had taken her from Alabama, where she had pursued her education on a full scholarship. The academic world welcomed her brilliance, leading to remarkable exam scores and a coveted internship opportunity with the State. Yet, for all her intellectual prowess, common sense eluded her. Unbeknownst to her, the closest friend she had made was betraying her trust, engaging in a secret affair with her boyfriend at that time. Her world crumbled when the truth emerged – a cruel joke played at her expense as they laughed and taunted her behind her back. Everything she thought she had built was shattered.

Despite the emotional wreckage, Rebecca displayed resilience. She masked her pain, severed ties with those who had deceived her, and upon graduation, she was determined to move forward. Embracing the chance to work with the State of California, she embarked on a new chapter.

Chino, California, was different from what Rebecca thought it would be. She liked it. She bought a house close enough for her to drive to work. It was warm and sunny, but it was crowded and stacked on top of one another. It was suffocating at times. Rebecca stayed in Chino for almost three years before leaving.

Rebecca liked Charming. It was a small town with space to move around. People were not on top of one another. Her house had a backyard, and she had a fence around her house. She could decorate it how she wanted. It was nice. Of course, Becca still kept to herself. Fears of making friends haunted her, and she enjoyed her peace. Samantha called her a wuss.
