TW: death (it's in the title)

Shoto dreams of dying three times, in three different ways.
It just so happens that Bakugou dies with him every single time.

~~~
The first time Shoto dreams of dying, he's in a retirement home.
A bed in a retirement home, to be exact.
It's not an overly comfortable bed, but it's not uncomfortable either.
It's comfortable enough that Shoto wouldn't mind closing his eyes forever.
This is the second thing he notices, actually- he's extremely tired.
He thought he knew exhaustion well, being a pro hero and all.
But no.
Every breath he took seemed to strain his muscles- and suddenly, the 'closing your eyes and never opening them again' option seemed a lot more appealing.
But, the third thing he notices stops him.
Bakugou is lying here, too.
It isn't surprising that Bakugou would show up in his dreams- they are dating, after all.
Shoto just wants to talk to Bakugou again before he closes his eyes.
He hopes Bakugou opens his eyes soon, because Shoto isn't sure how much longer he can keep his eyelids from drooping.
~
Shoto is still awake- somehow.
It's a dream, he reminds himself.
It feels like multiple hours pass in this dream, but he knows reality is different.
It's not yet sunset, but still close enough to nightfall that Shoto is getting stressed.
What if Bakugou doesn't wake up?
What if he won't have a chance to talk to his boyfriend?
What if he can't ignore the pull of sleepiness any longer?
Beads of sweat have formed above his brows, and Shoto reaches up to massage them.
The simple action is tiring- draining much more than it would have been only hours earlier.
Shoto looks at the window carved into the wall.
It's almost sunset.
~
Shoto is still awake- the sky is getting dark.
The lights in the room are blindingly bright compared to the outside of the building.
Bakugou still hasn't woken up.
Shoto doesn't know if he can hold on any longer- it's tiring to exist. He wishes he could just fall asleep.
But Shoto is scared that if he falls asleep, he might not have the power to wake up again.
No, he can't sleep.
(Not before talking to Bakugou again.)
So he waits.
And waits.
It's almost midnight- the sky outside is almost pitch-black. This is one of the few silent hours at night where the moon doesn't shine as brightly, and is almost smothered by the blanket of darkness.
Finally, Bakugou stirs.
"Bakugou?" Shoto has so much to say, and so little energy to say those things.
"Shoto," Bakugou says, turning onto his side to stare at Shoto. "I'm so tired, Sho."
"Yeah," Shoto agrees. The silence is comforting, almost, because both of them know how little energy they have.
It's like a silent agreement they make, because using his last bit of energy, Shoto reaches out and holds Bakugou's hand.
Finally, he can close his eyes and sleep.
~~~

The second time Shoto dreams of dying, he's fighting.
He gains consciousness in the middle of an intense battle, and he can't see the villains' faces.
They're blurred out, and any distinctive features are, too.

Shoto fights, and realizes Bakugou is right behind him, his back towards Shoto.

Shoto wouldn't call them cornered, exactly, but being zapped into a random battle scene is definitely not helpful to their current dilemma.

"Shit, we're losing," is something Shoto has never expected Bakugou to admit.

The validity of this statement should scare Shoto, but for some twisted reason, it doesn't.
As long as he dies with Bakugou, it might be okay.

Bakugou fumbles with his gauntlets for a little while, Shoto deflecting the villains' attacks.

"Run," is all Bakugou says as he grabs Shoto's wrist and drags him behind, shooting large blasts to boost their speed.

~
(hey, we all know this doesn't end well. this chapter is titled 'death', after all.)
~

They're definitely cornered now.
Bakugou does something to his gauntlets, and when he looks up at Shoto, he looks so incredibly sad.

"I asked Hatsume to add a self-destruct button," he says, and Shoto gets it.
They can't fight these villains.

(As long as they have each other, it's okay, right?)

Bakugou kisses him, and the last thing Shoto feels is an excruciating pain.

The third time Shoto dreams of dying, he's in a dark pit.
(Not a great way to die, starvation.)

But wait, he's not going to die of starvation.

"Fuck-" Bakugou says, and water sloshes at Shoto's feet.

Ah, asphyxiation, is all Shoto can think.
He hates the feeling of choking, not being able to breathe.

Of course his dream would be about drowning.

The water is at his knees now- where is it coming from?

"Any last words?" Shoto hugs Bakugou.

"My PC goes to Kirishima, my costume to my parents. Jirou can have my drum set, and Denki- my phone charger, I guess? Sero can have all my cigarettes- if he finds them- and Momo can have all my cooking supplies."

"No one but me is going to hear all of this," Shoto reminds him.

"I know, I don't care. You can have me- or the dead body, anyway."

"We're both going to be dead bodies after this, I don't want a corpse."

"Not even my corpse?"

"No."

"What do you want, then, brat?"

Shoto thinks. There's not really much he can have right now, with the water rising so quickly.
"A kiss- or, multiple kisses."

Bakugou obliges, kissing him on the lips, then the forehead, and then both cheeks. Soon, Bakugou is rabidly kissing every inch of skin visible- and when the water reaches their heads, Shoto kisses him back, like kissing him is his anchor to this world.

When his lungs run out of air, when he starts to gulp for air that doesn't exist, he knows he's done.

Again, at least they're together.
