You didn't know when or how it happened, one day you were as close as can be, you'd been messing around in the recovery pool splashing and screaming as she dunked you under the surface. You found yourself in her arms as you emerged, you had both stopped laughing and were gazing into one another's eyes when something changed. A flicker of something indescribable crossed her eyes. She had mumbled something under her breath and moved away from you to get out of the pool.
"Ona?" You questioned. Starting after her.
"I said I can't do this y/n."
Ona got out the pool leaving you standing waist deep behind her wondering what you had said, what you had done, where you had gone wrong.

Ona avoided you after that, at first you simply counted the days thinking she was just having a moment, an inner crisis but then it turned into a week, then two weeks.
Your team mates had noticed how could they not, you had gone from best friends, the dynamic duo on and off the pitch to the girl who stared longingly after her when she would escape the changing rooms as soon as possible, or drag Ivana with her onto the team bus so she didn't have a spare seat next to her.
Zelem grabbed your hand on that occasion.
"Come on y/n we need to run through set pieces I need it to be in your head if we stand a chance of it coming off your head and into the goal." You smiled despite yourself, Katie always knew what to say and what to do. You loved her, as a Captain yes but even more so as a friend.
You settled in on the coach, your head against the window as Martin Ho, assistant coach did a quick head count.
"Seatbelt y/n" He softly scolded, tutting teasingly under his breath before moving up the line. "Wouldn't want anything to happen to our Diabla!" United were known as the Red Devil's and you had earnt the nickname She Devil by the opposition fans of the other WSL teams for your ability to get around defenders and generally cause serious problems for them on the pitch.
You saw Ona roll her eyes before Ivana swatted her shoulder. Katie saw it to as Ona and Ivana were in the opposite side of the coach just one row in front.
"Don't let her get to you." She said softly before rooting around in her make up bag.
It was a 'travel' make up bag she packed for away games. Except her travel bag was double the size of your everyday make up bag and had various compartments and zippers.
"I would just love to know what it is I have done. How can I make things right if I don't know?"
Katie stopped rooting for a brief moment, sighing she turned to look at you.
"That's just the thing y/n you haven't, done anything wrong I mean. Some people are just arseholes and some people, like me are just amazing. Now aren't you glad you know such an amazing person?" She said it so seriously but you could see the mischievous glint in her eye.
"Oh yes Captain Zelem I am honoured." You sarcastically replied trying not to laugh.
A head popped over the seat in front of you.
"Who's an arsehole? Is it Tooney? I'd agree, she's a miserable bitch today." Alessia Russo laughed earning a punch to the arm from Ella who was slouched down in the seat next to her.
Katie laughed and shook her head, she motioned at Ona using only a gesture of her eyes. Alessia picked up on it immediately.
Alessia turned to where Ivana and Ona were sitting.
"Hey Ivana what do you think?" She asked loudly. You made a grab for Alessia's forearm that rested on the top of her seat.
Ivana had a confused look on her face as she turned towards her team mate.
"Do you think some people are just arseholes for no reason and think they can treat people however they want without an explanation Ivana? What about you Ona what do you think?" Alessia challenged, her smile was gone replaced with a hard stare at the Spanish defender.
"Well, shit!" You heard Toone chuckle.
"Fuck you Russo." Ona softly replied catching on to the underlying meaning of Alessia's question.
Ona stood suddenly, pushing past Ivana and making to get off the coach as soon as possible, she was however, stopped when the vehicle lurched forward setting them off on their journey.
"Ona back in your seat!" Martin yelled from the front of the coach.
"Best buckle up sweetheart it's going to be a long ride." Russo said a wide grin on her face.
You shrunk down in your seat.
Well, shit indeed you thought to yourself echoing Tooney's earlier remark and you dug your ear buds in.
