"Tia, I'm sorry this had to happen." Annalise tells me from her spot in the drivers seat. I huff out in annoyance and turn to face outside of the passenger window, my right arm propped up on the window.

"Why did I have to dye my hair? I like my natural hair." I complain, staring at my now black hair as it cascades down my front. Not that I mind the black hair, it's very pretty and suits me well - I just think my natural hair is prettier. It's an unusual yellow with black lines that stagger across my head like a bees design.

"Because it's not natural and it stands out too much. I'm really sorry, Honeybee, Ms Mearing said we had to. I think it looks beautiful on you." I turn to see Annalise smiling at me, an apologetic smile I'm all too used to. Annalise Harper has been my nominated 'teacher' and 'babysitter' all my life. She was there when I was born and when my mother banished my father from ever seeing me again. She taught me all the stuff school couldn't teach me, she looked after me when my mother left for her long business trips. She was there with me when my mother disappeared. But now? Now, she has to leave me. I'm to be left with another family, one my mother became friends with on her travels. "Don't look so sad, Honeybee. Think of all the new things you'll get to enjoy, the culture and the history. You've always been interested in history, you'll be able to learn new things from a perspective I could never teach you."

While that is true, my new 'family' are Native American which will be different from what I'm used to. I'm used to military families from around the world, but mostly all American. Usually the thought of learning more, of being showed history from a different viewpoint would be fascinating to me and I'd be bouncing around and happy. But I'm not. I'm leaving everything behind me. Everyone behind me.

"I already miss Cody."

"It's been two hours since you spoke to her. We were on the phone with her the majority of the car ride." Annalise chuckles and out of the corner of my eye I see her shake her head. She's right but it's not the same. Cody Witwicky and I have been close since we were born,  in the same year and same place. The residential area of the military base known as N.E.S.T has always been our home, both of us born in the on-site hospital within the residential district. Both of our parents were involved with the army, despite the fact that her dad wasn't technically in the military he was granted a government position as part of the base. Cody and I have always tried sneaking out of the camp and into the actual buildings that makes up the base but we've never made it out of the camp without being caught. Apparently, N.E.S.T is super secret and all the families of anyone who works there are not supposed to know what happens in the base without clearance. Which I do not have, nor does Cody - I'm not allowed because my mother and the woman in charge of the base, Director Charlotte Mearing, don't want me to know because of my father. Cody doesn't know because even though her mother, Mrs Mikaela Witwicky, wants her to know her father refuses to allow her.
