***Three Years Earlier: summer before 10th grade***
Black.
Thats what I see right now. I try to open my eyes, but a seering pain in my left sholder stops me.
I was moving, on something soft. A cloud? Was I dead? No, I wouldnt feel pain.
I couldnt hear anything, just buzzing sound, white noise. I saw flashes of light through my eyelids as I moved, still wondering where I could be.
I try to think of what happened, and it all slowly came back.
My mom and I were in the car, driving back from one of her old school friends baby showers. She lived all the way out in Delaware, which is about a three hour drive away. She only has about three months until her baby boy came. She was going to name him Dallas, after his father who past away serving our country.
My mother and I were actually having fun, listening to the radio. We were just dancing and singing, and just having a good time together for the first time in 3 years.
Thats when everything went wrong. She didn't see the red light, but I did. I saw it. I tried to tell her, but....
There were two bright lights. Headlights.
They shone in my mother's window, illuminating her face and her smile. How her eyes shined with happiness.
Then, in a flash, it was... Gone.
Her face, her smile, everything was gone.
All because we werent paying attention. I could have saved us both. Just like my father. And my brother. I could have saved them all.
But all the happy memories, gone. Overpowered with pain and guilt.
Happy.
Flash.
Black.
