"We've decided that we're taking her back to surgery in the morning," the doctor explained to the group of heroes piled into Tony's room. "She's been holding steady all day, so we feel like it is safe to do so."

"What will you be doing in surgery?" Bruce asked.

"We are going to repair her organs as best as we can and decide if we need to take any of them out or if any transplants are needed."

"And what about her knee?" Tony wondered.

"Her knee, unfortunately, is on the back burner right now. It is not life-threatening, so it will be the last thing we worry about. I do want to say that we have contacted the Wakandans and they have already begun drafting a knee replacement for her."

"Do you know how long it will be until she wakes up?" Steve asked.

"Unfortunately, I do not. It all depends on the surgery and how her body reacts to it. Everything that Y/N has been through and is going through is very traumatic for her body. But she's a fighter, she's hanging on so each second she gives us we will run with."

"Thank you," Pepper said, squeezing Tony's hand.

"Of course. Let me know if there's anything else I can do for you."

The doctor walked out and everyone stayed silent. Steve was the first to make a move, going to stand in front of your windows. The team watched as his shoulders slumped more than they ever thought possible.

"We have to do something," Clint whispered. "We can't just sit here and watch her like this. Steve can't do that."

"I have an idea," Bucky said. "It will only need a few of us and some comms devices."

"What are you thinking?" Natasha asked.

"I'm thinking that we're going to get him alone in that room with her."

Steve was still standing at the windows when Bucky stuffed a comms device in his ear. He pulled away and turned to give his friend a questioning look.

"Don't question anything," Bucky said quietly. "The team's placed at different sections of the med-bay with comms. We're going to buy you some time to be with your girl before they wheel her to surgery."

"But—"

"I said don't question it." He turned Steve around and began to nudge him towards your door. "Stop wasting time and get in there."

Shakily, Steve nodded and opened the door. The stench of antiseptic and bleach was stronger in your room than in the rest of the med-bay. There wasn't a chair and Steve was really wishing there was. His knees felt as if they could buckle at any moment. It was different being closer to you, he could see everything that was wrong and everything that was right. He took a deep breath as he reached his trembling hand out and brushed his calloused fingers over the small patch of open skin on your hand. Steve quickly retracted at the sound of the heart monitor. His eyes noticed the spike in your heart rate. He continued watching the monitor as he slowly touched your hand again, with the same reaction.
