A/N: This entry was inspired by the opening of Noughts and Crosses (by Malorie Blackman). If you haven't read it, I really suggest you do. It's a super good read!
.....
"Can I kiss you?"
Elizabeth's blue eyes widened as she met Meliodas' gaze, the blonde actually looking dead serious for once in his life. His clover eyes lacked their usual mischievous mirth, a blonde brow quirked in the most adorable way as he tilted his head ever so slightly. Blonde locks swept into his line of sight, their unruly state only making the female all the more uncertain as she coughed and shifted.
Elizabeth had known Meliodas for majority of her life, the pair being fast friends from a very young age. Her mother had once been friends with his father, the two often having endless play dates and such since their parents frequently discussed business affairs. In fact, it used to be a joke that they would get married one day. So it was safe to say that they were inseparable, a matching set. Where one of them went the other would often follow.
However, in recent history, their parents had a falling out due to business deals and Elizabeth and Meliodas weren't really meant to meet up and be friends. They were meant to be enemies and hate the other with a burning passion; despite that, every now and again they still went to their little hideaway to talk.
Yet, that didn't stop the strange situations that came up as they matured. Since they were often unsupervised during their meetings, the two could act without any fear of being reprimanded. An example of this behaviour was when Meliodas stopped coming for a time as 'girls were yucky' and he couldn't get cooties from Elizabeth. When he saw Elizabeth he was horribly mean, saying all sorts of things that weren't at all very friendly.
Yet despite his constant slandering and protesting, Meliodas did leave her stuff when he didn't visit. During those times he'd leave a little gift or a note telling a funny story about something that happened. Sometimes he even apologised for being such a brickhead.
So even when they were apart the pair were still connected. Still joined.
But Elizabeth had not expected Meliodas of all people to ask a question like this. Sure, recently he had grown a lot more forward, especially with the advancements of age and puberty, but even so she had not expected him to ask for a kiss. They were like siblings! No, better yet they were like twins, womb to tomb and birth to earth. Romance was not in the air for them.
But even so the female could not deny that recently it had been trying to butt its way in.
One of these particular ways was Meliodas' new habit of sneaking in gropes and not so platonic comments. Oh, Elizabeth knew too well of that. When she went to hug him, she'd often get a hand grasping her rear; other times she'd wear a dress and he'd make a remark about her underwear choice of the day. But despite the comments, Meliodas didn't make a big deal of it and passed it off as nonchalant jokes, stating that he valued Elizabeth's friendship greatly.
As a result Elizabeth tolerated his stupid antics, brushing them off as insipid guy humor. But that didn't mean she didn't have her own problems tied to Meliodas. Problems like suddenly seeing him a very non-platonic light, her teenage brain screaming that he was attractive and therefore perfect to be at the center of her affections.
But did that mean Elizabeth should say yes to the kiss?
Kisses often did lead to an insatiable passion, many saying that your first kiss was a very crucial milestone in life. It was rite of passage and so Elizabeth should not waste it. She should save her first for someone special and very important. Someone who would kiss her in a romantic way and not by asking such a silly question.
Yet even so, the female could feel her heart racing as she nervously bit into her lower lip. She glanced at Meliodas.
"W-why?" Elizabeth managed to choke out the words, her face a violent red hue. Her eyes were now clouded with widened pupils, her lips set into a slight press.
Meliodas let out a simple chuckle at the sight, fond of the way she'd always launch into an adorable stammer. Elizabeth would always have the most cute reactions to his constant teasing, breaking into a furious flush and sustained stammer whenever he even brought up a dirty subject.
Because of her reactions, Meliodas had always egged the conversations on - even going as far as to grope her a couple of times. But even if the blonde was nonchalant about it, he did not see it as a joke. Meliodas never saw it as a joke.
Elizabeth was very important to him. In fact she was more important than she thought, the very thought of the silver-haired girl making all the shit in Meliodas' life go away. When he got beat down by his dad, it was Elizabeth who patched him up; when he'd needed help to pass entrance exams for school, Elizabeth had helped him study; even when Meliodas was becoming a bit of a little shit, Elizabeth had straightened him out.
It was always her who made sure he was on the right track. Elizabeth always made sure Meliodas was alright.
And so he wanted to repay her for it.
"Just to know what it's like," The blonde shrugged slightly, his gaze turning to the grassy plains stretched before them.
He'd purposely passed it off like that, like nothing big. But really the question was something big. Meliodas could feel his heart slamming in his chest as he awaited her answer, his mouth and throat seeming dry as sweat beaded at his hairline. He could sense the anxiety filling his gut, the dread. But even so the smile Elizabeth gave him calmed it all. It made it all wash away, her soft voice soothing the blonde's nerves.
"O-ok then..."
The pair awkwardly turned to face each other, one a ripe tomato blush and the other smirking. Nervous blue met guarded green, their faces gradually growing closer as eyes fluttered closed. Then before a single word could be uttered, their lips met in a gentle and chaste kiss.
Elizabeth was sure her face had turned into a permanent shade of red, her heart feeling like it was sprinting a marathon as she felt her lips meet his. They felt warm and smooth against her own, like a silken cloth or perhaps even a cup of warm cocoa. In fact it was electrifying, perhaps even awakening, as the female felt the urge the deepen the action.
Acting upon it, Elizabeth was sure she'd hooked her fingers into his thick, blonde locks, while Meliodas' own hands grabbed the small of her back and the back of her head.
Elizabeth was sure she may have actually humored the idea and maybe got carried away with the motion of lips sliding against lips. But even so she did not stop it. In fact she mentally noted that albeit the clumsy and awkward initiation, Meliodas did show some sort of skill that she lacked. In actuality, she was sure he'd kissed someone before. He had to have. Untrained lips do not work wonders like these!
She wondered what else he could do...
Pink burned Elizabeth's cheeks as she banished such thoughts from her mind, lips opening slightly in an unintentional gasp. The feeling of tongue is what snaps Elizabeth out of her state, the female gently pushing the blonde away.
"That's enough for now."
Her statement was met with a chuckle, Meliodas grinning from ear to ear.
"So round two later?"
The question was met with a smack to the head.
