"I wanna take the bus this morning!" Greg nodded, clearing his plate away in the kitchen sink. "Not happening, your brother is going to drop you off this morning." Mr Heffley quickly rehashed, not impressed by the enthusiasm and glee radiating off of Greg. "But, why not, plus Vi's here so why can't I go with her?" Greg whined pointing out the window at my motorcycle parked on the driveway.
"No can do short stuff, the motorbike's staying here while I'm at school, I'm going with Rodrick," I grabbed a face wipe and wiped Manny's face clean and was rewarded with a smile from Susan. "Just please let me take the school bus!" Greg complained, I looked over to my right to see that Rodrick had completely zoned out and his eyes were blankly staring at the clock on the wall.
"It's your first day, you would get eaten alive, just go in the van with me and Rodrick." I pulled out my chair from under the table and patted Greg on the back. "Come on Roddy," I snapped my fingers in front of his face and he jolted back into reality. "You weren't sleeping with your eyes open again, were you?" I half-joked, as Rodrick lightly stretched before getting a plastic cup from the cupboard and started filling it with cereal contents. "Nah, not this time." He scoffed. "You three, school now. And, Rodrick I want no letters, phone calls or emails home about your behaviour. Greg, try and make friends. Vivienne, take care of Rodrick and don't encourage him." Mrs Heffley cleared the table and waved us off at the front door.
Greg raced to the front passenger seat but was pushed backwards into the floor by Rodrick, who was adamant I was sitting up front with him and not his brother. "I called shotgun!" Greg dusted himself off grumpily. "When?" I asked, folding my arms. "A second ago," Greg grumbled under his breath shooting me daggers, which was laughable on the face of an eleven year old. "Quit whining and get in the back, I prefer her over you and she doesn't annoy me, so get in the back," Rodrick opened the door to the back of the van and practically hurled his brother inside, along with some tools and van equipment and socks from last year. I bit my lip, stifling a laugh. "Here, Vi," He passed me the cup filled with cereal and a spoon.
"Great, now I have to go to school with these weirdos, snogging in front of me," Greg struggled to be heard over the sound of the van engine as Rodrick sped down the road. "Chill, we only snog when you're not around," Rodrick laughed, I slapped his left arm playfully as I shovelled in another mouthful of cereal. As the speed progressed, Greg and the other junk in the back of the van began to rattle, roll around and bounce. There was an obnoxious Ow that erupted from the back. I looked in the over head mirror, checking on the child in the back. "You good back there?" "No." He replied bluntly. "Good," I turned around and finished my cereal.
Rodrick turned the van a sharp left and all the stuff in the van, including me, spilled over. My top was covered in splotches of milk. Shit. I thought to myself. "Sorry Vi, take my jacket and wear it for the day." Rodrick unzipped his jacket and handed it to me. "Thanks Rodrick," I smiled, grateful for the jacket. "Hands on the wheel!!" Greg screeched, ruining the moment. "Shut it, pipsqueak!" Rodrick shouted, one hand on the wheel, the other slightly brushing over my stomach wiping off the cereal. "Ew," Greg complained. "Okay you can get out now," The van came to an abrupt halt as Rodrick pulled into the school entrance. Westmore Middle School. Good Lord.
I reached over Rodrick's lap and obnoxiously honked the horn getting Greg's attention and a bunch of other middle schoolers. "Gregory, don't forget your swim diapers I packed for swim class," Rodrick rolled down the windows and shouted out. Nearby kids burst into laughter as Greg glared unimpressed at his brother. "Oi, the rash cream is in the front pocket of your gym kit, remember to apply to the infected area on your butt twice a day!" I called out to Greg, pointing to his gym kit. "Ughhh!" Greg groaned as he ran away from the crowd of jeering middle schoolers. Rodrick began to snort from the seat beside me, giving me a high five.
