Tony Pov:
Tony drove his car onto the driveway of the third orphanage. It was a big, old, grey house with no plants in the front yard.
"Looks desolate.", Steve said, "You sure we're right here?"
"Absolutely."
"Okay then. Let's go in."
They left the car, went up to the front door and rang the bell. They waited a few moments then the door opened. It was a little girl that opened them. She had to be around five.
Steve leaned down to her.
"Hey, little one. What's you name?", he asked friendly. The girl looked at him almost scared before she left without a word and ran into a different room.
"What was that?", Steve asked but Tony just shrugged his shoulders.
"Excuse me. She's a little bit shy.", a women came to the door and greeted them with a smile Tony felt like was fake, "I'm Ms. Johnson."
"Hello, we're here to adopt a kid.", Steve said and reached out to shake her hand.
"Both of you?", she asked, "Together?"
"Yes, is there a problem?", Tony contered, scowling and trying to convey that there definitely wouldn't be a problem.
"No, sir. Of course not. Please, step in."
Tony and Steve looked at each other then they followed the invitation and stepped into the orphanage.
On the inside it was just as desolate as from the outside. No pictures, no child drawings on the walls and dark curtains covered the windows.
"Would you like to meet the kids?", Ms. Johnson asked.
"That's why we're here.", Tony said and forced a smile.
He didn't like this women."Of course. This way please."
She led them to the room where the little girl went that opened the door for them.
Ms. Johnson opened the large door for them and they stepped into a big dormitory with atleast twenty bunk beds.
"I'll be with you again later. I have some things to take care of. Feel free to speak to everybody.", and she left.Tony could see kids from two to twelve. But no! There was a boy who had to be at least fifteen. He had the little girl on his arms and was reading a story to her.
"Do you think what I think?", Steve whispered.
"Let's find out that little girls name?", Tony guessed.
"That's why I married you.", Steve said smiling and took his hand.
They went to the older boy with the little girl on the arm and sat down on the bed next to them.
"Hey, Kid.", Tony greeted him, "What'ya reading there?"
"Eh... the physics 1x1.", he answered hesitantly.
"Isn't she a bit too young for that?", Steve asked.
"We don't have other books.", the little girl said shyly.
"Sshh.", the boy made, "I'm sorry. She's just joking. We both just really like this book, right hon'?"
The girl nodded quickly.
Steve and Tony looked at each other confused.
"What are your names Kiddo?", Tony asked."I'm Peter Parker, sir.", he put down the book and shook Tony's hand.
"And what's your name little one?", Steve asked the girl.
She stayed quiet.
"It's okay.", Peter whispered to her, "You can tell them."
"I'm Morgan.", she said.
"It's nice to meet you Morgan.", Steve said and offered his hand for her to shake.
But she just pressed her head into Peters shoulder.
"I'm sorry. She's really shy.", Peter apologized.
"That's alright, Kid.", Tony assured, "We didn't come here to find a kid without flaws."
The boy smiled a little but it looked like he hadn't done that in a while.
"So, how long have you been here, Peter?", Steve asked.
"Since I was... five, I think."
"And how old are you?"
"Sixteen."
"So you've been here for eleven years?", Tony concluded.
"You're good in math.", Peter smiled but after a second his smile dropped, "I'm sorry, that was rude."
"No, Kid. I think it was funny.", Tony assured him, "And you're right. I am good at math."
Peter chuckled.
"What happened that you've been in an orphanage almost your whole life?", Steve asked.
"My- my parents died in a plane crash. I was four at the time. Then I got to my aunt and uncle but they got shot by a mugger that broke into our house. I don't have any more relatives, so that's why I ended up here.", he explained.
"That's a tough story, Kid. Are you alright?", Steve asked.
Peters face froze.
"Ar- are you a- asking me if I'm alright?", he stuttered."Yeah, what's wrong?", Tony asked worriedly.
"No- noone ever asked me that before.", Peter mumbled.
"Noone? Not even Ms. Johnson?"
Peter bit his lip and shook his head. Not looking them in the eye.
"Hey, Tony can I talk to you for a second?", Steve requested.
"Sure. See you later, Kid."
They took a few steps back before Steve said: "Here's something off."
Tony nodded.
"I think so too. Somethings wrong with this kids. I mean look at them."
He pointed at the kids that just laid on their beds, some were reading or talking but no screaming and running as it were normal for a bunch of kids this age."They have no joy.", Steve realized.
"Yeah. But why?", Tony wondered.
"I don't know but we'll find out.", Steve assured and gave him a kiss on the cheek.
