I couldn't believe how out of hand the situation has gotten between Hailey and her father. "This has gotten way out of hand, Hailey. He can't just lock you away like this. It's not right." I told her as I stood and started to pace as I try to think of a solution. "You know what, I am going to take you with me to my house. No ifs, and's, or buts." I decided.
"I don't have anything to wear on my feet, Max. I can't leave here." Hailey countered with a sigh. "I don't want to be here either, but I don't have a choice."
"I do not accept that. I can carry you back. Yes. I will do that." I replied.
"It's too long of a hike back to town for you to carry me back. You will need time to take breaks and you will end up losing the sunlight." She explained.
"I have a flashlight." I countered in response resulting in Hailey giving me a stern look.
"Max, it's not going to work," Hailey said shaking her head. "We have to think of something else." She told me.
"What if I tell my parents?" I asked. "My dad can step in and say that you have to live with us now until your mom comes back. This is plenty of proof that your father has gone insane." I explained.
"What if that just causes more trouble?" she sighed. "I just make things more complicated." She said sadly.
"You do not make things complicated Hailey," I told her as I sat back down next to her and pulled her into a tight embrace. "Your father needs help. I think my dad can help. I am sure your mom will come back quickly once we can get all of this settled. I just need you to trust me. Do you trust me?" I asked looking into her eyes.
"Yes, out of all the people in my life, you are the one person who I trust the most," Hailey answered staring back at me. I wasn't expecting that answer and couldn't help but smile. Knowing that she trusts me so much meant more to me than she will ever know. I pulled her tight against me and kissed her soft lips. When she kisses me back everything just slips away and I feel as if we are for a minute, in our own little world. I gently lay her back on the couch seat not breaking our kiss and hover over her as we deepen our kiss getting lost in the moment. My hands find their way to her waist and her arms wrap around my neck. I could smell the sweet scent that radiated off of her. She always smelt so good. When we broke apart for air, Hailey had the biggest smile on her face.
"Do you miss doing that?" I asked her with a smirk.
"Shut up," she said and playfully pushed me.
"So can we agree on the plan to get my parents involved?" I asked.
"Yeah. I guess I will try anything at this point." She answered.
"Good," I said with a smile and got up from the couch. "Pack up all of your things. This is going to be your last night here, I promise." I told her and gave her a quick peck on the lips. "I am going to head back and get things started."
"You are leaving already?" she asked with a frown.
"I will be back tomorrow, I promise," I answered and grabbed my things before heading to the door. I opened the door and realized I forgot one thing, "what shoe size are you?" I asked turning back to look at her.
"A size 6, why?" Hailey asked.
"Because I am going to need to bring shoes for you tomorrow. Now relax and get some rest. Tomorrow is going to be an interesting day" I answered before leaving and closing the door behind me. I followed the trail back to town and hopped on to Hailey's bike to head home. When I got home my parents were still out of the house. I ran up to my room and put my bag and shoes in the closet. I went back downstairs and sat in the living room waiting for them to come home. Tonight is the night that this whole out-of-hand situation gets taken care of.
