Max's P.O.V
Sitting in the car as David, or should I say dad drove to the Mayor's house for dinner, I was contemplating about everything that has happened in just 12 hours. I mean it hasn't even been a full day yet and already I have attacked a girl in the woods, which I really do feel bad about now but then again, she was being really stupid. Then I find out that person I have been calling father all of my life is not my father. On top of that my real father is the sheriff of the town, who was my mother's high school sweetheart and they acted as if they were never separated. I mean how is that possible? I couldn't imagine ever being able to just forget all the horrible things we went through and act like it never happened. I thought that after taking a shower it would help to clear my mind, but it didn't. I didn't have any clothes nice enough for this dinner, but David gave some of his old clothes from his high school days and it fit me well for some reason. I've always had trouble finding clothes that fit right growing up. Either the clothes were too tight or too big. I was glad that it fit because I know this dinner needs to go well and I am hoping that I won't screw up.
I watched David and my mother sitting in the front seat of the car. He had one hand on the wheel while his other hand was holding mother's hand. They seemed to be really happy and I wanted to be happy for them, but I just don't know what to do or even say at this point. I had to look away from them and stared out my car window until we arrived at the house. It was a huge house. My jaw dropped just looking at the place, I was in awe until mother snapped me out of it.
"Max, come on out, we are here." Mother said.
"Right. Sorry, mother." I answered and got out of the car. There was a nice cold breeze in the air, and it felt good helping me relax slightly as I have been tense all day since I attacked that girl. What was her name again? Oh, Hailey, right. I really need to remember names tonight. David seemed to notice how tense I was.
"Max, I know you have been hit with a lot of new information today and it's a lot to take in. If you need to take a few minutes outside to just relax, just hang out here on the property. The property is big so try not to get too lost. We will go inside, and we will all be waiting for you when you are ready." David said to me with sincerity in his tone.
"thank you, David. I really appreciate that." I said honestly. I watched them walk inside and waited for the door to close before I started to go on a walk on the property. I made sure to stay in the fenced area, so I know I won't be wandering on to someone else's property. I found myself once again lost in my thoughts as I walked aimlessly. I started to accept that having David as a father wouldn't be such a bad thing. He makes mother very happy and he has been very nice to me. He hasn't tried to bring me down or force me to do things. He was everything that I wanted but never had in a father so far. It will take a while to actually get used to, but I don't mind. This would also mean that the girl Hailey is my cousin. I have no idea why but that just felt weird to me. It's not like I caught feelings for her or anything from this morning. Though she was a pretty looking girl, it was cute when she tried to act all tough, and her hair smelt...oh my god I need to stop. I shake my head and try to get it back together. She's my cousin and cousins don't think about each other that way. I refused to be a creep. Mother taught me right from wrong and I wasn't going to be a monster. The past is the past and it will not affect me anymore.
Any normal person would be thrilled to be so openly accepted in a new environment and fresh start, so I don't understand why this is so difficult for me. I hated every single aspect of my life before I came here. I've seen things I wish I unseen. I will never be like those men that I use to call family. Women and girls deserve so much better than that. They deserve the right to make their own choices instead of getting taken from their homes and forced to live an oppressed and lonely life. Maybe I will feel better once every single one of them is caught and in jail where they can't harm anyone else ever again. For now, I just have to try to forget it all. When I finally looked up from the ground after being lost in my thoughts, I found myself in front of this house that is half the size of the Mayor's house. I looked around to make sure I didn't get myself lost, but I was still in the fenced area. How much money and property do these people own? I hope I don't embarrass mother tonight. I've never been around rich people before. I looked at my watch which was pretty much the only item I have ever had that kept me connected to the outside world. Mother gave it to me when I turned 13, she said her father gave it to her and she was giving it to me. I wish that he could have been alive today, to see me bring mother home, and be worthy of even wearing this watch. According to the time, I still had seven minutes left till I have to be back for dinner. I was going to just start heading back to the main house when I saw someone or something move in the house and I couldn't help but feel that I should check things out just in case someone was trying to steal something or if an animal found its way inside, and if it was just my imagination no one would know that I went inside anyway.
