"W—why are you calling me right now?"
Kade's voice was deep and sleep coated on the other end of the line, almost like he'd been just about to shut his lights off and turn in for the night, but decided against it and dialed up my phone instead.
What. The. Hell?!
"I just wanted to call and make sure you made it back safely. Hollin said he got you to the car alright but I couldn't get in touch with the driver to make sure you got back smoothly."
"You were calling to make sure I made it back to my dorm room okay?"
"Yeah...?"
The thought was absolutely ridiculous. There was no way someone of his caliber was calling to—oh.
Oh.
"You wanted to make sure I didn't tell anyone, didn't you?"
"What? No, I—"
"It's fine, I'll keep your little secret. Not like I want people to know how I'll actually get the credits on your album. Your perfect songwriting reputation will stay perfect and you don't have to worry about me gossiping—I've had enough attention from the public to last me a lifetime already."
"What's that supposed to mean?"
I scoffed.
"What, you mean you haven't had the time to Google me yet?"
"Um, not really. After talking with my publicist and my manager about the fight that happened tonight and how to do damage control, there really hasn't been a second to myself to do anything besides lay down."
"Well, then. I'll let you Google me on your own time. But seriously, I haven't told anyone, and I won't. So, you can hang up now."
He cursed on the other end of the line and I imagined him wrapped up in a cocoon of blankets on a bed where his feet hung off the end because his legs were too damn long.
"That's not why I was calling you, shit. Why are you so—fuck, nevermind."
"What? Why am I so what? Annoying? Bitchy? Irritating—"
"I was actually going to say judgmental. Or distrustful. But yeah, if you wanna go with irritating, I might agree with that one."
I narrowed my eyes in the dark even if he couldn't see them.
I sniffed away some of the stray tears that had fallen and clogged up my nose so that I could effectively tell him off.
"Shit, I'm sorry. Are you crying?"
"I'm not crying," I snapped out sharply, forcing any weakness from my voice as best I could.
I hated showing vulnerability, showing that I was anything but strong to the outside world.
