I knew something was wrong even before she was late to meet with me at Oakgrove to see my sister.
I knew something was wrong, and yet I didn't think to ask Hollin to check on her until it was too late.
He'd decided against taking his own car, though, and brought me along with him after picking me up in the parking lot at Oakgrove.
I couldn't find it in me to even go inside.
My terrifying over-imagination had kept me from telling Hollin that it wasn't necessary; Ivy had probably just taken a nap and overslept. She was fine.
Except the scenes danced behind my eyes of the memories Ivy had confided in me, the way her ex-boyfriend had abused her and everyone had been none the wiser...
Nothing could've prepared me for the darting glances of alarm on the dorm advisors at the front desk of Ivy's building.
If they'd recognized me, they either didn't mention it or were too rattled by what they told us that it completely slipped their minds.
"I-Ivy's not here. Check campus police, it's the smaller brown building in between the parking lots to the left of the courtyard."
Hollin's face had slid into an impenetrable mask of blank fury as the two girls went back to gossiping about what was likely the reason for Ivy being at the campus police station and the reason they knew where to find her.
He and Ivy had developed an easy friendship together, and watching him transform into the avenging bodyguard I'd originally hired him for was a sight that would've normally had me commenting on their newfound relationship, but I hadn't said a word since we'd gotten out of the car.
So, I hadn't been an idiot to track Ivy down at school.
She wasn't napping peacefully in her bed upstairs safely in her dorm.
She wasn't alright.
She was at the campus police station? What had he done to her? Was it even him, her ex-boyfriend Caleb, or had it been someone else? Something else?
It was only when we were met with furtive glances and shifty eyes inside the police station that I realized just how busy the place was.
It was crawling with campus police and even city police, each and every person running with panic stricken faces and loads of papers in their hands or their voices screaming at someone on the other end of their phones.
I didn't think I'd taken a real, full breath until someone escorted us to a room down a mildewed hallway.
Until her red-rimmed green eyes met mine after the door swung open and the rest of the room fell away and there was nothing but her.
Until she was flinging herself into my arms, her deep red hair forcing any other color or sight out of my vision.
But then someone's deep voice that was far too familiar to be a coincidence spoke up, and my entire body went rigid.
