Miranda knelt beside her bed, her spirit in tune closely with the Lord. Denab stood guard over her, encouraging her and protecting her. Not that he would have needed a warning with the stakes as high as they were tonight, but he was thankful one had come nonetheless. He lifted his sword and held it over her head as he spread his wings to cover her, keeping her hidden from any enemy eye.
Doubt didn't need anyone to announce his presence. Denab felt him coming a mile away. He didn't move from his position.
"I know you're here. I can feel you. You won't win tonight. You might as well give up. I'll break through your cover and have her doubting before the hour's up." Doubt slowly crept towards her bed. His hideous laughter filled the angel's ears.
Denab knew Doubt's ways. He refused to fall for his tricks. He stayed put and sent a prayer to the Throne for the grace and strength to complete his mission and keep Miranda in prayer.
"Katelyn will be ours. Our leader needs her, and what he wants, he gets. Nothing and no one will stand in his way. What does your master want with her anyway? She's just a worthless human. And this girl you're hiding, what is she? One person praying won't be enough to shield Katelyn from the coming claim on her soul."
Denab kept his line of communication open with the Lord, ignoring the countless discouraging words that were meant not only for his ears, but for his charge's spirit as well. He remained focused and continued his prayers and praise, letting each one of Doubt's words bounce off the invisible field that surrounded him.
Trevor pulled up to the wreckage that was feet away from the drive he had intended to turn into, unaware of the demon and angels that surrounded it. He put his car in park and stepped out just as the rain began to grow heavier. He flipped the hood of his jacket up over his head and ran towards the debris in front of him while he called for help.
He looked in the driver side window of the truck. "Are you alright in there?"
"Yes," he heard the man say. "Check on those in the car."
Trevor ran around the busted up heap of silver metal and knocked on the window. He got no response. "Hey!" he yelled and knocked harder. Still nothing. He yanked several times on the door before it finally opened. A woman's limp body fell to the side, stopped only by the seat belt across her chest. He gasped and stared at the woman in front of him. "Leah," he whispered. He glanced up at the house that sat back off the road unsure if Katelyn knew. He felt her neck for a pulse and sighed in relief when he'd easily found one. "Leah, it's Trevor, can you hear me?"
His question was met with a hushed groan. "Help is on the way, Leah. Everything's going to be okay. Just hang in there."
His phone vibrated in his hand and he glanced at the screen, worried it was Katelyn. It wasn't.
"Hello, Mom. I'm kind of busy. Can I call you back?"
"Trevor, something's wrong."
"What, what's going on? Are you are all right? Is Dad all right?"
"We're fine, Trevor. It's Katelyn I'm worried about."
"Why, does she know about her mom's accident? I'm in front of Cara's house but I don't see any sign of her."
"No, Trevor. I haven't talked to her. Something's just not right, I can feel it."
Trevor wasn't into the whole religious thing. He just couldn't make himself believe that there was some other force behind all the happenings in the world. He had too many questions that didn't have answers. Yet he couldn't deny the fact that his mom's "feelings" were right pretty much every single time. He had witnessed it far too often growing up. So when his mom said she was concerned or worried about something or someone, he knew to pay attention.
