Katelyn sat across from Trevor at the kitchen table. The idea of meeting up with Miranda had taken over her thoughts. Could it really be that easy? The ending to their once strong friendship wasn't on the best of terms. How would things play out after all this time?
Trevor cleared his throat and brought her back to the present. "Everything okay?" he asked.
She focused her attention from the tiny blue-flowered pattern of the kitchen wallpaper to the man she had fallen in love with. "Yeah," she smiled. "Just trying to decide what to do about this evening."
"I see."
"What do you think? Should we have her stop by?"
Trevor set his cup of water down before he answered. "Honestly, I think it would be a good idea. Miranda's a Christian," he reasoned.
"Yes."
"Well, I'm thinking she probably knows a lot more about this stuff than we do, ya know?"
"I suppose." She thought for a moment. "I'm one lucky lady, you know that? To have you in my life. I really believe that any other guy would've gone running and never looked back after what happened last night. Can't say I'd blame him, though. It was crazy, to say the least."
"Yep, that's for sure. You're stuck with me though, like it or not."
"Promise?"
"I promise."
Katelyn looked at the clock. The hours had passed quickly, too quickly. "I guess I'd better make that call," she held out her hand. "Mind if I use your phone?"
"Not one bit."
She tapped her fingers against the table as she listened to the recording that greeted her. In a way, she was relieved Miranda didn't answer. Not that talking with her would have been bad, she just wasn't sure what to say. At least the greeting gave her a couple more seconds to pull her thoughts together. "Umm, hi, Miranda. You can stop by tonight around five if you're not busy. Trevor's parents will be here as well. Okay, so, I guess we'll see you soon then. Bye."
"Are you nervous?"
"Yes, a little. It's been a long time since I've talked with Miranda."
"It seems certain things have a way of working themselves out."
"Funny, Trev. It's not you in the hot seat right now."
"Sure it is."
Katelyn gave him a question look, "Oh, how so?"
"The way I see it, if you're in the hot seat, then so am I."
"Well," she stood to her feet and straightened her shoulders. "I suppose we'll have to come back to this – maybe. Our guests will be here shortly and I have to figure out something to feed them."
"Oh, Dad said he was going to pick something up. I talked with him while you were visiting with your mom."
"That's sweet of them." Katelyn smiled. She'd never see Trevor's parents in the same way again. The courage his dad had shown the night before would forever be etched in her memory. He didn't have to stay. It wasn't his battle or his very existence they were after. It was hers. And yet he chose not just to stay, but to fight.
"Trev, your dad's a good man. I'm sorry it's taken me so long to really figure that out."
"Yeah, you're right, he is. Don't feel bad, though. It took me a while to figure it out too, and I've lived with him my whole life."
Katelyn shook her head. "There's hope that my family will be that close, too, one day."
"Don't just hope, pray."
