The next day, you barely saw him because he was working at another part of the mine. You decided to help others instead of carrying the blocks on your own, to let them rest a little.
Now, you are sitting at the top of the pyramid-like pile of stones. Not only because it became something of a habit to isolate yourself, but partly because you wanted to take the high ground to have a chance to see him.
You can't get away from the happenings of last night.
You can't imagine how it could have been you in his dreams, especially since you can't recall anything about it.
And you can't stop the thought that he may have remembered you, even after all these years.
He wasn't aware of it, but his mind may have protected pieces of those childhood dreams.
Kid didn't hurt you, even if they threw you to that cell because they expected him to do so. They probably had a reason.
Only the first night was somewhat different. But that time, you weren't yourself.
You were so desperately angry and scared that you pushed all your emotions back.
But he still decided to help you.
And even after you told him what you are protecting, he didn't even ask about it.
It's his dream, but he wants to find the One Piece by his own strength. Only such people are worthy of finding the treasure.
You take a bite of your dango and sway your legs in the air absent-mindedly, running your eyes over the crowd to find the redhead.
But no matter how you search for him, you can't spot him anywhere. It's surprising since a two meters tall man with fire-like hair isn't something one would skim over just like that.
And you hear steps from your back. Kid climbs up to the stone you are sitting on and takes place around a meter far from you.
The usual, satisfied grin rests on his face as he starts eating.
You don't turn to him and let your arms fall, getting ready to jump off.
"Where the fuck you think you're going?" he snaps.
"You said I should keep distance from you," you answer calmly.
"Not when I come on my own," scoffs the man. "Sit back."
"You pretended almost to kill me yesterday. I shouldn't be around you."
"Maybe I threatened you to stay."
"You did?"
"Right in this moment. Sit back. And since I'm so notoriously evil, give me one of your dangos," smirks Kid.
You sigh and do as he said but sit closer to him. This way, you can feel at least some of his warmth.
You watch his face silently as he starts eating. The little wrinkle at the inner edge of his eye, the line of his nose, his scars that used you upset you.
Your gaze dwells on his amber iris for long enough to make the corner of his lips twitch.
"What are you looking at?"
"Wonderful things exist even at places like this," you answer.
Kid's neck turns almost to his hair color, and he casts down his eyes.
"Woman-"
"I was talking about the food," you smile.
He turns pale and frowns in the middle of the movement of taking the next dango. You start chuckling softly, and he blushes again, shouting at you to shut up.
