They would usually feed on berries, kelp and plants. Kelpie are often depicted as a dangerous shape-shifting water creature who can appear on land as a horse, appearing to their human victims as enchantresses, enticing them to ride on their backs, then carry them down to their grave, also being capable to destroy a living creature.
