This story is set in a world where on a person's birthday they receive a certain number of words that they can use for the year. If they use up all their words, they have to wait until their next birthday to get more. Pretend Naki and Jeongin are closer in age. They're in the same year in this story.

If you are sensitive to violence/assault (there's not much, only a little) please skip over the marked areas. It's not super important.

This is a Jeongnaki AU.

Everyone had a certain amount of words. They could never use more words than that in a year. That was how the world worked

Barely anyone ran out of words. Usually, everyone had enough that they had extra by the next time they got words. There was always the rare once or twice a year case where someone used up too many words. That was usually just a while before their birthday. Then, if that happened, people would judge them for a moment, calling the person talkative, then go about their day. Maybe the person would be teased by friends for it, but that was it.

Barely anyone had heard of a case with few words.

But Minaki had none.

For the first few years of her life, Minaki had many, many words. She talked a lot and had a lot of friends. But as she got older, she had fewer and fewer words and was told to use them sparingly. Finally, on her 12th birthday, she woke up, looked at her word count excitedly, and was shocked to find a big, red 0.

She had gone crying to her mother, who had taken her to countless therapists and doctors. None of them were able to help. Slowly, Minaki lost her friends. She was ignored and basically kicked out by the 'popular group' that she had once been in. Soon, no one thought of her as Hwang Minaki, the pretty, kind girl that all the guys liked. She was Hwang Minaki, the mute kid. The one who had no words.

She had gotten used to it. She always sat in the back corner of the class and the teachers never called on her because they knew she couldn't answer. Sometimes, they called her to come up and write down answers, but that wasn't very often.

Her favorite class was art because no one ever bothered her in the slightest. None of the kids there talked to her for fear of being a bullying target, but they didn't disturb her. They just left her to mind her own business.

And that's just what she was doing when he came.

"Hey, guys, we have a new student!" the art teacher, Ms. Jung, called. She was a kind, bubbly woman in her twenties who loved talking to kids. She had straight, glossy black hair with lavender colored highlights and was very pretty. She was Minaki's favorite teacher. "Please welcome him!"

A foxy boy with fluffy brown hair and honey brown eyes walked in. His eyes darted every which way as if he was nervous, but he gave a sweet smile, showing off pearly white teeth.

"Hi everyone, my name is Yang Jeongin, it's nice to meet you all," he said quickly, his voice mostly calm.

Minaki looked up for the short introduction, then went back to her work. What was the point of smiling or being nice? He was just another one of those kids who might talk to her a couple times, then stop after he realized that he would become a bullying target and she wouldn't respond anyway.
