"So, what are we doing out here?" Tommy asked, walking into a town with Jack and Sykkuno. "What's the plan, big man?"

Jack chuckled. "Stop calling him that," Sykkuno stated. "It feeds his ego." Jack turned to Sykkuno, offended. "I'm just kidding." Sykkuno snickered.

"Sykkuni, that was a criminal offense!" Jack exclaimed.

"I was joking!" Sykkuno defended himself hurriedly. Jack laughed at his expense.

"We're headed to the Gaelic Inn," Jack answered Tommy's question. "My friend needed some supplies and we're nearby, so we're stopping by."

"Oh," Tommy paused, then looked back ahead. "Do you never use horses when you travel?" He asked. "I thought humans used horses."

Jack gave the boy a look of confusion. Why did Tommy call him a human. "Not all humans can afford a horse," he said. "I'm not saying I'm poor, but I don't need one."

Tommy snickered. "What about Sykkuno?" He asked.

Sykkuno shrugged. "Well, I don't need one, either," he replied. "If you haven't noticed, we're wearing badges." He tapped a badge on his shoulder with his fingers. "This is an Adventurer badge."

Tommy frowned in confusion. "If you're adventurers, aren't you supposed to be at the Guilds?" He questioned.

"You don't have to be all the time," Sykkuno replied. "You can hang out at the Guild unless you have a mission, which we do."

Tommy perked up at the mention of a mission. "What's your mission?" He asked.

Sykkuno paused, looking away. "We're looking for a very bad man," he said. "Someone who has been destroying villages with no trace."

Tommy's face cleared with understanding. He nodded thoughtfully. "That must mean you're very powerful, aren't you?" He asked.

Jack shrugged. "I guess we are," he said. "I'm not the best there is like my Sykkuni, but his sister is scary as heck. She can send them running before she can even fight."

Sykkuno burst out laughing. "Rae's not that scary," he said.

"She threatened to skin me with a potato peeler if you got hurt in this mission!" Jack defended himself, glaring playfully at the taller man. "She's small, but she's terrifying!"

"Only because you- nevermind," Sykkuno paused when he remembered their company. "She's not that scary."

"She's protective as heck," Jack said, huffing as he crossed his arms.

Tommy looked back and forth between Jack and Sykkuno. "What about you, Jack?" He asked. "Do you have any siblings?"

Jack paused. "Well, I do and don't," he replied. Tommy gave a look of confusion. "I have brothers and sisters, but they want nothing to do with me and I want nothing to do with them. They're not my family."

Tommy looked ahead again. "I don't know if I have any," he said. "But I do know that family is very important. I'd want to help them if I could."

Jack glanced at Tommy curiously, then he shrugged. They stopped in front of a tavern with a connected inn in the back. They walked in together, and Tommy caught sight of the bartender. He paused as he felt a chill in his spine. Even more so when that bartender met his eyes.

Sykkuno put a hand on Tommy's back. "Keep moving," he muttered to the boy's ear. He bent down, but the boy was tall enough that he didn't have to bend low.

Tommy followed his lead and found a seat with Sykkuno at the back, away from the eyes of the bartender who didn't look back at him. Jack went and booked a room before meeting the bar owner. Jack handed something wrapped in deer skin to the owner before taking the group up to their room.
