chapter one: puppy eyes

Today you had decided to go over to your best friend Himari's house to hang out with her like you do on most other days. However, today you find yourself spending more time with her daughter, Misaki, more than anything.

Misaki approaches you now with a bottle of nail polish and a smile so bright that you can't really resist. "Y/N, could you please paint my nails for me? I want to look as pretty as mommy but she never paints my nails!"

"Sure," you reply as you look over at Misaki rolling her eyes. "Hand me the nail polish but you have to stay still this time!"

"I will!" she gasps in utter disbelief that you agreed. "I promise!"

Misaki sits across from you at the table in the seat next to Himari and you begin to paint her nails.

"Y/N, you and I should get our nails done some time," Himari chuckles.

"What?! No fair! How come you two can go to the spa and I can't?!" Misaki pouts.

"Because you've got your own personal manicurist right here," you reply with a shake of your head. "But what do I need to get my nails done for? I've got nobody to impress."

Himari rolls her eyes at your typical behavior. "Well then maybe you should try getting yourself out there again," she begins with the same talk the two of you have had countless times.

"No way," you insist.

"Why not?" Misaki chimes in as she looks up at you with her innocent eyes. She's only in second grade but you'll be damned if that girl isn't preceptive as hell. "You need to find your true love, Y/N."

Not to be rude, but a small laugh escapes from your lips at her comment of 'true love'. If there's one thing people should know about you, it's that you don't believe in true love the slightest bit. But when Misaki looks at you with a slightly worried and confused face, you sigh and decide to give her an explanation.

"Love works for some people, like your mom and dad, but not others, Misaki," you tell her.

"But what about true love?" she continues to press. "Don't you believe in that? Everybody's got a true love, don't they?"

"Misaki," you sigh as you look down at the table. You know what you're about to say is going to be wrong but you just can't bring yourself to lie to the girl. "True love is nothing, it's just a phrase. It doesn't really exist."

When you look up at the young girl, you see her eyes beginning to water. Himari pulls her tight and hugs her. As your friend wipes her daughter's wet eyes, she looks at you with a smirk that scares the hell out of you. She should be upset when instead she looks as though you've stepped right into some kind of invisible trap.

"We'd just like to see you try to make yourself happy."

"But Himari-"

"I know you're still sour after everything you went through with your ex, but isn't it time to look for something new? You know not all people are like him," she explains.

"He manipulated me, Himari. He lied about almost everything in our relationship just to get to the things he wanted. Why would I wanna try after that? He proved to me what I told Misaki, love isn't real," you quietly reply.

"That doesn't mean you can't be happy," she tells you as she releases Misaki from her hold.

"Other things make me happy besides being in a stressful relationship," you mutter as you begin to paint the young girl's nails again. "Like being with the two of you, for example."

Himari scoffs like you just said the worst thing in the entire world to her. "Jesus, Y/N, you just made Misaki cry! You could at least try for her sake!" she then shouts.

Misaki tacks on with puppy eyes that begin to melt your soul. You don't want to give in, you really don't, but perhaps if you can manage your way through one little date then they'll both leave you alone for eternity.

"Who is it you're trying to set me up with anyway?" you sigh as you look over at your friend.

"Hinata's got a friend kinda like you, he needs someone to help open him up a bit to dating as well. I think the two of you would make a good match!"

"Himari, I don't want to date anyone," you remind her.

"Fine, fine, then can you at least tag along for one double date? After that, I promise I'll stop bugging you about all this."

"You swear?" you repeat with narrowed eyes, knowing that your friend is often crafty with her promises and lies.

"I swear," she agrees. "So will you go?"

"I guess I don't really have a choice," you reply, closing the bottle of nail polish and sitting back to cross your arms. "When are we going?"

"Friday night!" she immediately proclaims. "Hinata and I will pick you up in our car and we'll go out to dinner."

"What about me? Can I go?" Misaki asks, wiggling her eyebrows. "I can bring someone from school."

"No," Himari replies as though she's had this conversation with her daughter a million times before. "No dating until at least middle school, got that?!"

"Fine," Misaki sighs. "How long 'til my nails are dry?"
