chapter two: similarities

You run around your house as you get yourself ready to leave. Too soon, your phone buzzes and you see a text from Himari saying that she's only two minutes away. You then rush down your stairs and throw on a matching pair of shoes. When you stand up to check yourself out in your mirror, a wondering thought hits you straight in the head.

Why the hell am I rushing so much? I'm not excited and I don't care to impress anyone so what's the big deal?

You shrug off the thought, thinking that it'll be a nice night out with two of your friends no matter what happens. So when their car arrives, you step out more calmly than you had previously been and open the back passenger door with a smile on your face.

"Hey," you call out as you step inside, only to find a handsomely tall man with black hair sitting in the seat beside yours. He gives you a small grin as though he hasn't smiled in ages but is trying for your sake. The first thought that then hits your mind is that this is going to go poorly.

"Hi, Y/N!" Himari and Hinata then greet back to you.

"Y/N," Hinata continues. "This is my friend, Kageyama."

"Nice to meet you," you smile politely. "My name's Y/N."

"Nice to meet you, too," he quietly responds.

"Hinata and Kageyama have known each other since high school!" Himari explains.

"Really?" you ask, looking in Kageyama's direction, to which he nods in verification.

"Hinata and I were on the same volleyball team and we did pretty well," he explains.

"Oh? I did volleyball for a few months back in elementary school until my mom decided they were teaching me wrong and had me removed from class," you reply, laughing at the idiocy of the thought.

"Huh?" Hinata chimes in. "Teaching you... wrong? But all you do is go up and hit the ball."

Kageyama sighs and shakes his head at his friend's typical behavior. "Maybe for you, but it's not like that for everyone. Y/N, did your mom play volleyball?"

"I'm not sure, but she's an athletic trainer and has done all kinds of sports so probably," you shrug.

As Kageyama nods, you realize that he's quite nice and more polite than you were expecting. At least the night won't be an absolute disaster. Though you don't really want to be on a date, you'll continue to at least make the best out of the situation.

When you get to the restaurant, Hinata parks the car, and Kageyama walks around the back to open the door for you. Your stomach burns for a moment as you meet his eyes. You don't think you've ever met a guy who's done something like that for you before.

As you step out of the car, Himari smirks and winks at you. However, you ignore her as you thank Kageyama. Then, as he walks off, you approach her with an eye roll you hope neither of the other two see.

"Did you put him up to that?" you whisper as she links her arm with yours.

"Nope," she shakes her head, smiling politely.

"But you said he had trouble dating..."

"That doesn't mean he isn't nice," she reminds you. "He just doesn't like putting himself out there, just like you. Now come on, let's go inside."

Once you're led by the waiter to your seats, you sit beside Himari with Kageyama straight across from you. You have a good time with your friends as well as getting to know a new one. Perhaps, you think to yourself, that if things don't work out like you hope they won't then maybe you could be friends.

"Y/N, I never knew you played volleyball," Hinata randomly begins to question. "Were you any good?"

You can't help but chuckle at his somewhat silly question. Since volleyball comes so naturally for him he finds it a bit difficult to understand why you ever stopped. "I'll put it this way: if you ever played me one-on-one I'd probably never touch the ball except to serve."

"That's what I say to him, too," Himari scoffs as she crosses her arms. "But he never seems to listen."

"Well when I first met Kageyama he was super mean but once he learned to play with a team he got better!"

Kageyama side eye's his friend. However, when he catches the small grin on your face as he looks over at you, his expression softens.

"Are you suggesting we join a team?" Himari sighs. "There's no way I can handle that and be a good mom for Misaki, are you crazy? I already rely on Y/N way too much and she hardly gets paid most of the time!"

Hinata looks over at you regretfully for his careless words. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to suggest anything! I just thought that since some of us had it in common we could, I don't know, use it to bond?"

You and Kageyama both freeze up at the same time and you feel Himari shift in her seat. She quietly kicks her husband's leg under the table, causing him to cry out in pain. "Ouch!"

Himari smiles sweetly, ignoring Hinata's outburst, and giggles a bit awkwardly. "Sorry for my husband's behavior."

After that, Hinata doesn't talk for awhile. However, as you and Kageyama bring him into the conversation he begins to relax and get a bit more comfortable again.

Once dinner is over, you are then driven back home. You smile as you say goodbye to Kageyama who says a quiet goodbye back. You then shut the door and wave as the car drives off. You walk back into your house, but the second you get inside and take your shoes off, your phone buzzes from a text.

HIMARI: Sooooo?

YOU: Sooo? What?

HIMARI: What did you think of Kageyama!!

YOU: He was nice.

You smile to yourself as you relax down on your couch, thinking about how not-terrible your date was.

HIMARI: Would you go out with him again?!

YOU: No. You promised only one date!

HIMARI: Fine. Get some sleep. I'll see you soon. LY <3

You sigh as you put down your phone and slink down into your seat. It really wasn't as horrible as you thought it would be, but you don't plan on seeing him on another date.
