chapter five: beach
The next evening before sunset, you and Kageyama meet up at a nearby beach. You wave when you spot him after parking in the nearby lot, smile as he begins to walk towards you, and the warmth hit you in a way that you just can't help but be in a good mood. The two of you then walk side by side and take a stroll along the sandy beach. It's a bit quiet between the two of you at first, but he soon opens up.
"Do you enjoy the beach?" he asks. "I honestly can't remember the last time I've been to one."
"Me neither," you admit as you attempt to think back to when Misaki last asked you to bring her to the beach. "But it's nice with friends."
Kageyama nods in agreement. You then spot a beach volleyball area and your eyes light up. Pointing over in the direction, you ask him if he plays.
"It's quite different from indoor volleyball, but I don't think I'd be terrible," he thinks aloud.
You grin and take him by the hand, pulling him towards the net. When you get there, you bend down to pick up a ball. Then, as you turn around, you find yourself almost chest to chest with him. Not expecting him to be so close, you can feel your face and body begin to heat up.
After a moment of not knowing what to do, you take a breath to cool down your body and take a step back away from him. "Do you think you can beat someone who has practiced for a whole month after practicing their multiplication times tables?" you grin.
Kageyama laughs. "I guess I'll just have to find out."
You duck under the net and take a few steps back before tossing the ball up and serving it over to him. Kageyama jumps up to reach for it and slams it down hard on your side. As he jumps up, you see a big, attractive smile grow on his face in almost slow motion. He's so handsome and looks so happy doing what he loves- you admire him quite a bit for that.
The game goes on like that for a little while until you lose 10-0 and you give in before he's forced to give you the mercy rule.
On your way back to your car, you find yourself laughing over absolute nonsense, and Kageyama does the same.
"I was expecting to lose back there but damn was that a rude awakening," you tease, causing him to smile back handsomely.
You tense up as you look over at him. It finally begins to hit you that even though Kageyama is a great guy, there's no way you could date him. You wouldn't want to jeopardize his relationship with Hinata or yours with Himari. Besides, it'd be weird since your best friends are dating, wouldn't it?
Only a few moments later, Kageyama brings you to a nearby bench where the two of you can clean off your sandy feet.
"I've enjoyed the time we spent together today," he admits, "but I don't think it'd be a smart idea for us to date."
Though you had thought that to yourself mere seconds ago, for some reason hearing him say that was like a shot through your heart.
"It'd be weird, right?" you ask, hoping he'd agree to that over saying something along the lines of 'I'm not interested in you that way' since the sting of rejection would be way harder to take.
"Probably..." he replies quietly.
You suppose that's for the best. Besides, not that you want to admit it, but you are beginning to catch some type of feelings and that's the last thing you want to deal with right now.
Once your feet are clean, the two of you begin your walk back to the parking lot. However, just at the entrance of the beach, Kageyama's phone buzzes with a message. He reaches in his pocket to pull it out, but it falls when he accidentally grabs onto his wallet instead.
Not thinking much of it, you bend down to pick up the phone for him. You then finally realize why he's set this whole thing up: he's got a message from a girl on his phone with three red heart emojis at the end of whatever she had written.
Goddammit, all guys really are dicks. Good thing we put an end to it now.

When you get home, you walk to your bedroom and notice that you've also received a message via some random account on Instagram. When you open it up, you see it's some fan account for a musician that your ex used to be obsessed with. Of course, he's made a new (and unblocked) account just to look you up and message you again, but what you weren't expecting is to see an image of you with Kageyama at the beach while you were playing volleyball.
@jyzmusic_jack4ss: who the hell is this?!?!?
@Y/N's account: none of your damn business, you creep!
@jyzmusic_jack4ss: i told you what i'd do if you ever found someone else y/n. don't make me do that.
@Y/N's account: he's just a friend, that's all. please leave me alone.
@jyzmusic_jack4ss: you better not be fucking lying to me!
@Y/N's account: why would i? he's got a girlfriend anyway...
(Well, at least I think he does.)
@jyzmusic_jack4ss: good.
You throw your phone down on your bed and fall face-first into your pillow as you let out a muffled scream. Thank god it's over with Kageyama or else you mind find yourself in some deep shit you don't want to deal with.
You really did think your ex had finally decided to leave you alone but he just doesn't want to stop lording the fact that he can control you even from a distance when he gives you those scary threats. Just a little longer, you tell yourself. When he gets a new girlfriend he'll finally leave me alone.
NOTES: I'm dying over the ex's handle. I didn't know what to name it but I thought jackass fit nicely <3 (Also, the J names *eyeroll*) If you guys got suggestions maybe I'll change it tho!
