dream's pov.

"what the hell is a nether portal?" y/n furrowed her eye brows, staring down at the book in her hands.

we had stumbled across a ruined nether portal while in search for the east village. the village that is supposed to solve all of our problems? the village that holds all of our hopes and dreams? the village I'm starting to think is nonexistent?

yeah, that one.

I made my way to behind y/n, resting my hand gently on her shoulder. the other night, I came to the conclusion that I took every opportunity to touch y/n in any way. I wonder if she noticed.

"yeah, I was right, It's to get to the nether. what do we need in the nether?" I paused, backing away from y/n to run my fingers through my dirty blonde hair. "I have no clue." she said. "but, the book says we need to go."

with a nod, I replied with a shrug of my shoulders. "so far, I trust the book.. kinda." I shook my head at my own stupidity, holding back a laugh. I turned to see y/n staring up at me with a fogged look in her beautiful e/c eyes.

"what?" I furrowed my own brows, copying the girl in front of me. when she didn't say anything, I began to sweat, the nervousness creeping in on me. "out with it, bubbles." I watched the wheels turn in her head at the nickname; I didn't even realize what I said before it came out of my mouth.

"bubbles?" she questioned me, raising one of her eyebrows.

I opened my mouth to speak but quickly shut it, unsure of what to say. after doing that 3 times like a fish out of water, y/n let me off the hook and began explaining what she had discovered.

"the book says that we need to go to the nether to get blaze rods; then we need blaze powder. it says in order to get the blaze powder, we have to put the blaze rods into the crafting table." she paused, making sure I understood everything before continuing on. "Once we have that, we need to kill really tall dudes called endermen for their eyes. or, we can trade gold with piglens from the nether for the ender pearls— I'm pretty sure thats what they are actually called. either way, we need the ender pearls and the blaze powder to make eyes of ender."

I listened to every word she spoke, almost getting distracted a couple of times by the way her lips moved— they were mesmerizing. before I got caught, I quickly regained my focused.

Once she was finished, my mind started calculating everything. I crossed my arms with a nod. "then what do we do from there?"

"I don't know." she paused, shrugging while handing the book to me so I could take a look myself. "look, the pages are blank after that. they've always been blank from beyond the point we actually need them. I think the book wants us to take it one step at a time." she dryly laughed.

I managed to tear my gaze away from y/n and stared down at the book, wanting to know everything and anything about this world. for now though, I had to deal with one step at a time. "alright, lets just build a nether portal then. couldn't be that hard, right? it says that we just need obsidian—" before I could continue, y/n cut me off with a couple of facts. "we can't use crying obsidian for a nether portal and we need a flint and steel to activate it."

I nodded, taking a look around the ruined portal we were located at. I spotted a chest behind the black-ish purple obsidian easily. I let out a low whistle as I made my way over to it.

"what?" y/n called out.

"I found a chest." I said smugly as I heard y/n's hurried footsteps fall closer to me.

"what're you doing just looking at it like an idiot??" I bit back my smile, wishing I was wearing my mask right now so I wouldn't give y/n the satisfaction of knowing my reaction to her words. "open it already would ya?? I'm at the edge of my seat here, dreamy." my heart picked up at the nickname, thinking about the reason behind it a little too much as I cautiously opened the chest.

it's probably just because my name is 'dream', right?

deciding to push those thoughts away, I focused on what was in the chest: a couple of gold and iron nuggets, a flint and steel, and 4 pieces of obsidian. I lifted my gaze from the objects that were now in my hands to the nether portal next to me; I counted the missing obsidian from the ruined portal and easily did the math.

"today's our lucky day, bubb—y/n." why did the word 'bubbles' keep trying to come out of my mouth?? I don't think y/n noticed, unless she was playing dumb for my own sake. if so, bless her heart for that.

"how so?"

"we got just the right amount of obsidian to finish the portal off." I looked down at her, the smug look back on my face to replace the blush and embarrassment.

3rd person pov.

before lighting up the nether portal, dream and y/n decided it was best to prepare before going into the nether, since they both knew the smallest amount of what they were getting themselves into.

"is the food cooked?" y/n asked, already finished up with the extra armor and tools.

"yeah, here." dream walked over to y/n and gave her half of everything he had. y/n in exchange gave dream his backup set of iron armor and tools.

"oh! I almost forgot." y/n threw her backpack over her shoulder. "I made you a surprise." the tone of her voice made it obvious she was smirking. y/n held two items behind her back, a grin replacing her signature smirk. "pick an arm, dreamy." she said proudly, raising both her eyebrows at dream while she anticipated his answer.

a blush spread across dream's cheeks, rolling his eyes lightheartedly at the girls childish behavior.

it only took 5 seconds for him to give in and play along.

"uhm.." dream looked from y/n's left arm to her right, repeating the motion until he finally said: "right".

y/n's eyes lit up, like she hoped he would choose her right arm and she held out a shield.

dream smiled, taking the shield from her and holding it in his left hand. "thanks." he simply said but there was a lot more meaning behind the word then he would ever like to admit.

y/n nodded in response, taking her other arm out from behind her back to reveal a small, copper telescope. she slipped it into her pack and took a deep breath, signaling that she was ready.

dream turned towards the nether portal and held out the flint and steel in his hands, making flashes and sparks of red appear multiple times before finally producing fire, then lighting the portal.

dream stumbled back, not expecting the loud noises or the bright purple movements from the nether portal. it made him want to be sick.

y/n caught dream before he tumbled to the ground, holding him up steadily whilst taking in the portal. she could barely focus on it though, not with dream in her grasp.

"you alright there?" she turned her full attention to him.

"yeah." dream sucked in a breath and lifted his head to see y/n. she had an unimpressed look on her face that practically said: 'I don't believe you one bit'.

he laughed, regaining his balance and standing up right. "yeah, I'm good." he said with a small, reassuring smile.

y/n let it go and walked up to the portal, the purple swirls making her head spin as she took her final step into the portal.

dream called out for her, but she was already gone. "for fucks sake." he muttered, rushing up to the portal and throwing himself at it, being sucked into the underworld.
