"You did so well!" I smile when I see Lucas approaching us with his arm around Sophia.
"Thank you, honey," He stops in front of me, looking down with a smile on his lips. "I heard you cheering for me."
I get nervous and start fiddling with my hands, "Yeah, I thought I'd encourage you a little bit."
He pulls me in for a hug, "I really really appreciate it."
Truthfully, I sigh, "I'd do it all over again every day if I could; I had so much fun today."
As if sensing that I'm referring to when I leave soon, Sophia smiles warmly,"Don't worry, Amber. I'm sure you'll get the chance to do it again. You can come over on holidays anytime."
I mirror her smile, "Thank you, Sophia, you are always so kind."
Waving me off, she tells me, "Oh, honey, it's the least I can do for you."
"Let's go home, ladies, we have a lot to do," Lucas interjects, smiling at our interaction.
And so we do.
"It's cute," Raven shrugs as I swirl about in my new school uniform, which Sophia had just brought into my room. "Just cute?" I gape. I twirl around again, the plaid skirt bouncing as I do so. She rolls her eyes at me, "Are you going to marry the outfit or something? You've been obsessing over it since you saw it."
"It's so cute!" I squeal.
"I just said that," she responds dryly.
"No, you actually said 'It's cute'- not 'It's so cute'. There's a difference."
She rolls her eyes again, "Whatever."
"Hey! Why so rude?" I look at her through the mirror. "Is it because I didn't cheer for you?" I tease.
When I don't get a response, I continue, "Who're you texting?"
Almost immediately, a response, "No one."
Looking at her suspiciously, I stride over, "No one doesn't make you blush."
She looks up at me, a serious look on her face, "Amber, it's nobody."
Her serious facade lasts until a message pops up on her phone and a smile breaks through. "That's not nobody!" I squeal. A deep blush covers her cheeks. "Lemme see."
Reluctantly, she hands over the phone, "Fine."
"A guy!" Both shock and excitement washes over me.
Placing her hand over my mouth to muffle my words, Raven hisses at me, "Lower your voice."
I open my mouth rigidly in an effort to bite her hand. Immediately she removes it, sending a tight glare my way. I only smile.
"Can I not see?" I'm pleading with her and she just folds her arms, not showing any signs of budging in the slightest bit.
"You have to promise to be quiet."
My curiosity beats my ego and so I cave. "I'll be quiet, I swear."
"You promise?"
I nod.
She looks at me suspiciously, "I wanna hear you say it, Amber."
"I promise."
She huffs, muttering something under her breath that I don't hear before handing the phone to me.
I almost squeal, but then I remember my promise and keep my mouth closed.
Scrolling through the contact, I smile, "His name is Ryan?"
At the name, she blushes, "Yeah."
Snickering quietly, I start to scroll through the contact. My mouth pops open when something catches my eye.
Ryan - You live in my heart rent free.
Raven - As do you, I never thought I'd feel this way for anyone.
Ryan - Me neither, I feel like I'm dreaming that our relationship exists.
Raven - I can assure you, you aren't.
Ryan - You make me so happy
Promise long forgotten, I squeal loudly. And instead of scolding me, Raven rolls her eyes. I don't, however, miss the ways her lips slightly curl upwards. I look at her in confusion, "He's your boyfriend. Y'know you can fangirl over him if you want right?" Her eyes gleam with excitement, "Really?" I nod at her, a small smile on my face.
I like to be prepared for most things. I - in this case - was not prepared when Raven began to scream loudly, only barely muffling her voice with her hands that cover her face.
"I'm sorry, he just - he's so dreamy. I can't even fathom how -- "
I sigh, "Raven, you're allowed to swoon over him."
"I know, I just...I don't really have friends that swoon over relationships"
My voice is cordial, "Well you can always call me to swoon over him."
And then, as if we both realized something at the same time, the room falls silent. I don't have to ask Raven what the issue is because I already know. I'll be leaving shortly. And as much as that thrills me, it also scares me at the same time.
To be honest, Raven and I have grown closer in the last few days. Even when we are bickering, we always stay respectful and courteous. I'm not sure how I feel about leaving her because it feels like we've formed a connection in the few days we've been bonding.
"Hey, we'll still be here for each other even if we have to text all the time," she nudges me, as if reading my mind.
"I mean, yeah... I guess so"
She smiles cheerfully, "On the bright side, you're going to a highly posh boarding school that you actually want to attend. If I were your age, I would kill to go there."
One element of my and Raven's relationship that I enjoy is my tendency to rile her up, so recalling the prior conversation, I grin and add, "Yeah because my skirt's freaking amazing!"
