I'm startled awake when my alarm goes off

I'm startled awake when my alarm goes off. Blindly, I reach for my phone that I think is on my bedside table and swipe lazily in an effort to halt it. Thankfully, it stops and I lay in bed for a few more minutes, blinking wearily. Though the morning had just risen, I was still tired. "Maybe I should just stay in bed today," I mutter to myself grumpily.

I roll over in bed, burrowing deeper into the comforter, my thoughts clouded by ideas of lying in bed all day. As if mocking me, my second alarm goes off and I groan in exasperation clamping the pillows that surround me over my ears in an attempt to drown the sound out.

With considerable discontent and another groan of protest, I finally push the covers off my body and pull myself out of bed slowly. Immediately, I trudge to the bathroom to rid my mouth of the scent of morning breath that haunts me every morning I awake.

When I finish brushing, I splash some cold water on my face before drying with a towel to wake myself completely. I'm about to start showering when a knock on my room door interrupts me. "Coming," I respond, walking out of the bathroom to open the door.

I tumble to the door and swing it open. When I see him, I squint, "Lucas?"

"I'm sorry—did I wake you up?"

"No you didn't, I was actually just about shower," I respond lightly.

He breathes out in relief, "Sorry for disturbing you, I just wanted to invite you to dinner later tonight."

I frown, "Dinner?"

His eyebrows crease and his words jumble, "Yeah—I just needed—I mean I wanted." He pauses for a moment to take a deep breath. "I just wanted to do one last thing with you before you leave for school."

Oh.

I smile weakly, "Sure, I don't mind at all."

He gives a relieved smile. "Great, the reservations are at eight-thirty tonight, but the drive is quite lengthy, so just please be ready by six."

"Ok, great. I'll keep that in mind."

He nods, thanking me for accepting before he heads downstairs. I smile one last time—even in his absence—before shutting the door and trudging back to my bath.

I spend the morning in online classes with my teachers. My last day of online school feels normal. It's almost boring. It's not something I dwell on much, though, because as soon as my last teacher of the day dismisses me, I immediately shut my computer and hop out of bed. Now I won't be a liar and say I wasn't excited when I first learnt I was going to be homeschooled, but after a while, I started to feel lonely. I never got the chance to bring it up with Lucas and Sophia but I'm happy that things turned out the way they did, because now, I don't even have to.
