"Do you really have to leave?" I whined like a child

"Do you really have to leave?" I whined like a child. They had stayed for a day for my birthday. That's all father had allowed them. I'm surprised he even let them visit me at all.

Even though it hadn't been that long since I had last seen them, I truly did miss them. Since this whole arrangement had been made this was truly my first time away from my brothers for such a long period of time.

"We will see you in what? Just over two months for the mafia ball and then you get to come home to see us." Santi replied.

He was right. The annual mafia ball was two months away and it was my family's turn to host it at our estate. I had always dreaded the lengthy evening. Mafia families from around the globe join together for one night of peace and deal making.

There has always been a no-weapons rule implemented to keep everybody safe and if you were the first to pull a weapon that had been secretly smuggled in or the first to throw a punch then you were fucked.

It didn't seem so monstrous this year because I would be attending with the Moretti's and I had the option of conversing with my brothers and then leaving when they pissed me off.

I gave each brother a hug and walked them to the door to wave them off like the true gentleman I was. They loaded there things into the car and then got in but not before threatening to castrate Leo if he looked at me the wrong way.

I laughed.

Same old brothers.

The sun had long set beyond the line of trees, blanketing the former blue sky in a frigid darkness.

I thanked everybody and made my way up the stairs to our room, Ares and Athena in tow. Leo said he would be up behind me in a few minutes so I got changed into my pyjamas and tucked myself and the dogs into bed.

I shut off the light, encasing the room in darkness. It was strange , I thought, that I could only fall asleep comfortably if I was wrapped in my husbands protective hold.

I tossed and turned for what seemed like an eternity and he still hadn't come to bed.

I huffed.

I pushed the duvet off my legs and made my way down the hall. I took a guess that he would be working in his office, so that's where I headed first.

The halls were deserted as I walked down them, an uneasy silence echoing through.

I pushed Leo's office door open and switched on the light. Papers lay strewn across the table, nothing out of the ordinary.
