Ryder always sat at the back of the classroom trying to remain hidden in the back and it wasn't long until he became almost invisible. That's what happened in high school, you either make yourself known or become the wallflower.
People knew he was there but never bothered acknowledging his presence. He didn't really have friends either. Being invisible meant that he could always observe people around him, picking up the smallest of details that they thought no one noticed. He also, of course, noticed Jane.
He heard that she was an orphan but did not know how even though they lived in a small town and news spread quickly. But what he did know was that she had the power to stop the bullying but didn't.
He would watch her moving passively from class to class trying to avoid everyone, anyone but it was impossible because now she was already the target of bullies.
He also noticed that she never smiled genuinely. Even when a teacher would crack a joke in class, her lips would twitch up but even that smile would not meet her eyes.
