the next morning, claire cuthbert sent a letter to her sibling-in-laws, explaining the situation and praying it would arrive before her daughter.
meanwhile, samantha had gone out with her friends to the pond. they were all sat under a tree in the shade, snacking on various items brought by each of them for a makeshift picnic.
"i just don't understand. who would do such a thing?" sam shook her head as she bit into a strawberry.
"and what was with your mother's tone when tawny asked if she knew?" madeline added in.
"you heard it too?" tawny looked at the girls and they each nodded their heads.
"what?" benedict asked.
"she sounded nervous. almost scared to tell us the truth." sam explained.
"what?" anthony rhetorically asked. "why?"
"i-i don't know. it was very strange." tawny said quietly.
"yes, strange indeed. but you know what is stranger?" benedict began to stand but maddie shook her head.
"bennie, no."
"going swimming in your undergarments!" benedict exclaimed and began to undress himself until he was only in his underclothes.
the three girls laughed and shielded their eyes as he ran towards the water.
"it's too cold, ben! you'll freeze!" tawny exclaimed, laughing.
"it's not that cold yet." anthony reasoned before turning to his friend. "ben, wait up!" he called out, following suit. soon the two boys were splashing in the water, their female friends watching from afar.
"hey, i think we're missing someone." anthony jokingly said to benedict.
"if you don't get in here right now, we're throwing you in; clothes or not." bennie laughed.
"fine, fine!" tawny shook her head as she stood and started to undress as well. the two boys turned so they couldn't see until she got in the water and splashed them.
"well that's three. and three is greater than two." ant shrugged at the other girls. eventually, madeline and samantha gave in and the five were splashing away happily in the pond.
a few hours later, the group of five had gone to the vanderbilt home to help the girls get ready to leave, mainly sam. she placed her bags by the door and the group decided for their last time together, they would bake. the group baked muffins and turnovers and scones and pastries delight. they put them all in four even baskets, one for sam, one for tawny, one for claire, and one to leave for maddie.
