" dresses and tea "

samantha and anne sat and stared at the wall. the latter's current mood would have to be if a groan was an emotion. anne looked awful. her hair was unruly and her face was not even awake yet. samantha, however, looked clean and ready for the day.

ever since the incident in london, she felt as though she had been carrying a heavy weight on her back. she hadn't even mentioned it, let alone allow herself to cry over it, once. so being able to get it off her shoulders was relieving to her and she was now back to her own self, happy and ready for the upcoming adventures.

"at least finish your milk, anne."

"nothing appeals to me marilla." anne groaned. marilla looked over at matthew and walked over to the sink. "i don't feel very well. since it's saturday, would it be alright if i go back to bed for a little while?" anne asked, her voice rough with sleepiness.

"yes, that's fine. i'll be leaving for rachel's soon." aunt marilla said, gathering the dishes.

"growing up is certainly a trial by fire." sam smiled to herself at the agony she sounded like she was in.

"well, since you are indeed growing up," she paused, grabbing anne's plate. "if you would like to invite diana for tea today, you may."

"tea?" anne's hand dropped from holding up her face. "with diana as my guest?"

"only if you're up to it."

"oh, marilla, you are able to imagine things after all. or else you'd never have understood how i've longed for this very thing. a grown-up tea is one of my highest ideals of earthly bliss!" anne breathed in realization. "oh. but i have nothing to wear!"

"oh, you have two perfectly good dresses."

"but they won't do for tea without puff sleeves. matthew, sam, tell her."

"she's been dreaming of those since the day we met." matthew said, pumping the water.

"and since we'll before— could you add puff sleeves to my grey dress?"

"they are the height of fashion." sam tried to reason, but marilla wouldn't have it.

"i've never heard such foolishness."

"but it wouldn't take too long. please, marilla, please. i'm the only girl without them."

"do you want tea today or not?"
