upon getting home, samantha went upstairs to get the book she was currently reading. as she approached the top of the stairs, she heard a sobbing coming from anne's room.

"anne?"

the girl continued to gasp and cry as the brunette stepped into her room gently. she sat at the foot of her bed and rubbed her back soothingly.

"anne, what's wrong?" she now cried even harder, and sam's heart broke at the sight. "it'll be alright, whatever it is." she softly laid down and hugged anne's back, comfortingly rubbing her back, just as her mother used to do for her when she was younger.

downstairs, marilla and matthew spoke hushingly, as marilla sewed.

"it's been a trying day." marilla said, setting down her project. "what on earth possessed you to buy all those boots?"

matthew turned with a grunt.

"it was a frivolous expense. they'll have to go back."

"do you ever think..." he paused and turned around. "about michael?"

his question caused marilla to stop in her tracks. "yes."

"so much would've been different. if he hadn't gone—"

"yes. goodnight." she said, stepping up the stairs.

matthew continued to think. he thought about his brother, how he had found love and gone off to london to marry. he thought about that family, and how they had been led back to avonlea now. he wondered what brought samantha there, in their possession. his sister-in-law hadn't mentioned why she would be living there, and he wondered if she was sick.

pulling out a quill, matthew started a letter, writing to claire cuthbert in london, in attempt to get some sort of answer to his many questions.

marilla, on her way to her room, stopped at anne's just to check on her. what she saw was samantha and anne huddle in the same bed, anne in sam's arms, which were tightly wrapped around the red head.
