Do you ever get those moments? The ones where everything in the world was right? You weren't worrying about anything? Everything was falling into place?
Yeah I wish I was having a moment.
"Coley, we have 45 minutes!" My roommate screamed from her side of the apartment. I yelled back something, not even I could translate it. I searched my room for my grad cap before finding it under the night stand. I dropped to all floors before snatching it from the dust bunnies that are guaranteed to be under every ounce of furniture in my room.
"Collette!"
"Coming Wands!" I yell back before getting back on all fours and running into our living room.
Wanda was a year older than me and made sure to remind me at least once a week. We met in 8th grade after she transferred from some rich white school in New York to Texas. Her parents split up and she stayed with her mom. We had a few classes together, but we mainly hung out in band together. She played flute and I played clarinet. She had dirty blonde hair at the time but goes between brunette and blonde all the time. She was 5'7, just an inch taller than me. Her eyes were green, like pears. She held a wide smile that was contagious at all times. It was her way of showing people she wasn't gonna bite your face off. She had the biggest RBF unless she was smiling.
We graduated highschool going into the same field, business.
I was always known to be independent. I hated people doing things for me. Even as little as holding my back pack. I can't explain why I hate it, but it hurts my heart in some way. My brother Steve was the same way. He was just as independent. He went into construction. He was good at it too. He built his house that he is living in now with his roommates and built almost any furniture that grandma needed.
"You ready?" Wanda asks. I nod with my cap and phone in hand before following her and the clicks of her heels out of the apartment and into the lobby. We waved to Bobby, a new janitor who has a major crush on Wanda.
And then Mom called.
"Oh God." I mumble while fumbling into Wands little Honda. "Hi Mom!" I fake the enthusiam and hide the stress behind every vowel.
"Hey dear, I just got news that Buck will coming with Steve. Do you have an extra ticket?"
"Yes! I do Mrs. Rogers!" Wanda shouts. She's had the biggest crush on Bucky since 10th grade.
"Yes we do Mom." I repeat into the speaker phone. She chuckled and sighed.
"Good. We're at the entrance right now."
"We're? Is everyone with you?"
"Yeah, we car pooled. You know how your dad is."
Do I now?
"Okay well Wanda and I are already late so we will see you after the ceremony okay?"
"Mkay sweetie. See you guys in a little."
For the next 20 minutes, I grill Wanda on the drooling over my brothers bestfriend spiel. I hadn't seen Bucky since my sophomore year of highschool. He was 3 years older than me and one year older than Steve. They met at summer camp and then Bucky convinced his Dad to stop homeschooling him and go to an actual middle school. They've been inseparable since.
Everyone thought I was crazy since I didn't find Bucky attractive. He was the basketball captain in Highschool by junior year and did various amounts of clubs and extracurriculars, so everyone knew him. He's always been a brother to me, and that is all he will ever be.
