---------- actual chapter----------
Waking up in your childhood bed is something I wont ever get used too. I ended up staying at home with mom since Wanda was staying with her parents and I hate being at the apartment alone. It was warm. I love my apartment but home is home. Where the busted closet door is. Where the purple walls are embarrassingly filled with excessive amounts of band posters. Where the scent of Mom's french toast was.
Oh my god. French toast.
I jump out of bed quicker than I should've and almost fall to the floor. My dresser caught me with a jab in the rib cage rather than open arms but what works works. I recover from my 1 v 1 with the dresser and open the bottom drawer on the right and slide a crew neck over my sports bra. Then a pair of sweats that are definitely too small but also the biggest that I own in my old room.
I slide my house slippers on that are stained with god knows what and run down the steps. The railing comforted my hand, bringing back memories of when Steve got his head stuck in the bannister of the staircase.
The downstairs was gifted with Mom's kitchen. Dad had bought her the house, keeping Mom's cooking skills in mind. She cooked for anyone but her. And by anyone, I mean anyone. She makes food for people who are sick or mourning at church. For the neighbors. For the neighborhood kids when the go to the pool. For the cat that has no home but likes our backyard the most. For her husband and kids. But not her.
She ate, but only Ramen and cheese. Colby Jack if were specific. I don't know why but she told us she didn't know either so we left it at that.
"Good morning Coley." God I missed hearing that every morning. "Go help set the table."
Who's over? We only set the table when we have guests.
It's didn't too long to know who was over. Bucky and Sam.
Sam Wilson was my Senior. In high school, Sam "adopted" me when I was a freshman and he was a senior. He had graduated and then a year later been hired to coach the high schools JV foot ball team. So even when he was and adult, he always had my back during highschool. When he saw me walk through the dining room. He ran to me and bear hugged me.
"Coley the Cougar." That I didn't miss.
"Sam the Senior." I reply as he lets go of me. It didn't hit how tall he was until I realized my head was at his shoulder. "How's coaching?"
"Good, JV won our last game so that exciting. How bout you? Whatcha gonna do now that you're an official adult?"
I sigh and take the utensils out of Steve's had that he had extended to me. Bucky was laying plates down. "Get a job."
"Didn't you get a full ride? You don't gotta pay for nothin, why you in a rush to work?"
I don't even know. But I can't sit and do nothing all day. I'd go mad.
"I'm not sure, I just need to do something. I need to get some work experience before I open up my own business ya know?" I admit while laying down forks and spoons at all the plates.
"I getcha CC. Does it feel good to be home?"
"Oh yeah. And this," I say while waving to the plate towered with warm and buttery french toast. "This is the cherry on top."
Mom sighs and sets the plate down before she grabs my head and kisses the side of it. "I thought that my girl should get her faviourte breakfast since she is officially graduated." She exclaims. I hug her back before taking the middle seat. Steve sat on one side of me and Mom on the other. Dad makes his grand entrance from his office that is right across from the dining room. Dad takes the head of the table and Bucky sits across Steve and Sam sits across Mom.
Sam and Steve met through me actually. I had went to one of Sam's football games and Steve had been my ride. Then I introduced the two and they clicked just as well as Bucky and Steve did.
So all three of the can thank me for their friendship.
"Where do you wanna work?" Bucky asks before taking a bit of eggs. His gaze stayed on me and almost got lost in it.
What the hell is happening?
"I'm not sure. I've been thinking a clothing store so I can get some ideas on future plans." I blurt, trying to focus on the french toast in front of me.
"There's an opening at the shop I think." Dad offers.
Dad owned a motorcycle shop. Texas had millions of bike shops but Dad's was better. He had an actual love for bikes and only hired people who felt the same. That's why all of the boys work their. Grandpa was the founder of the shop but when he died, Dad took over. Then he introduced Steve and I to bikes and we loved riding them with Dad. Every Sunday, Dad would take us around the block 4 times on his bike after church. Steve then got one as his big graduation gift and has it in storage. Bucky joined the crew a couple months after his freshmen year of highschool. And Sam works on the weekends if he doesn't have practice.
I found the love young. Riding my first bike was magical. It was the first fear I was able to conquer. I was petrified of falling. But once I felt the wind stir around me, my hair in my face, the thrill. It felt like a first love. The thrill was so undeniable I knew I had loved bikes. I don't have a bike yet, but I will get myself one. Soon.
"In the store section?" I ask. Every bike shop has a store section. We have clothing that comes in bulk weekly since we have great quality and great prices. I worked at the shop during summer to save up money for a new laptop.
"Yeah, our manager just retired so we could use a new manager of the shop if you'd like. Obviously just until you get your own business up and running." Dad says before stuffing his face. I look to Mom for approval and she has a wide smile on her face and with a simple nod I got the approval I needed.
"Okay! I'll take it!" I say before stuffing my face with the best french toast Texas has seen.
"Great! I'll have one of the boys take you tomorrow. The shop got renovated so you may need a little walkthrough before you actually start."
"I cant CC, I got practice with JV tomorrow." Sam says apologetically. I shake it off and look to Steve.
"Sorry Coles, gotta go cake testing with Nat. We'll be there for a while if I know my fiancé"
I sigh in defeat.
And now I want cake.
"I'll take you." Bucky offers with a smile before taking a sip of his orange juice.
"Great!" Dad says. Mom starts to ramble on about the new episode of Downton Abbey.
I look to Bucky once our eyes meet and give him a 'thank you' smile and he returns his charming one back.
