Chifuyu was in sheer shock.
When did those words get into his mouth? When did he even comprehend what he was soon to say before the words had left him? When had he grown so incomprehensibly stupid?? Had he spent too much time with Baji that his brain was finally beginning to morph into one of his?
He couldn't glance at you after he'd let those words fall from his shaking lips. Ashamed. He felt ashamed.
You seemed fine, biting a bit on your straw when you had trouble finding the right words to say before finishing your sentence. You'd moved to the seat previously reserved for you in front of Chifuyu, finding it better for speaking to him. It only made Chifuyu's face burn hotter.
He caught at the corner of his eye the sight of you looking out the window, your teeth holding the straw in its grip as your fingers toyed with the edge of an unused napkin. Chifuyu wanted to get a glimpse of you before he couldn't anymore.
He tore his eyes up.
The curl of your lash above the glossy puddled vision of your eyes. Hair perceived parts of your face but the small misfortunes didn't matter.
You're beautiful.
And he let the wrong words slip.
He walks home with his head down that day, not daring to ever tell you what he'd initially called you over for nor contact any of the people you'd recommended to him.

To say it didn't hurt was a lie.
Of course, it hurt to hear a friend you'd felt certain feelings for at times was looking to find a partner. You could slap yourself if you could. You should be happy for him; happy that he's taking a new step and is trusting you with this big leap.
You lay flat atop your mattress, dazedly staring up at your blank ceiling.
If only you could make up your mind.
To be or not to be was what your cheesy heart would comprehend. Though your mind already knew the answer.
You'd help him. You'd find him someone to love as his own. You'd toss aside your feelings to aid another's.
In the end, you both knew it didn't matter.
"1 more minute, I beg."
You cry in your sleep, clinging the bottom of your pillow till your knuckles turn fair. You toss around your blanket with your legs, folding and twisting around the cloth.
"A minute to be with you once more,"
Your lip quivers, that familiar cold burn riding into your nose. You can feel the tightness of your eyes clamped shut. The sting of your fingernails against your cold, cracking palms. His words burning through your ears.
