Claim: Al-Bukhari investigated 600,000 Hadiths in 16 years. That means 37,500 Hadiths per year = 3,125 Haditha per month = 105 Hadiths per day = 9 Hadiths per hour - given 12 hours a day. Impossible!
Response: Hadith scholars' definition of Hadith is the chain of narrators, not the Saying/text itself. For instance, if 3 companions (X, Y, Z) narrated one Saying, and 10 Tabi'ees narrated the same saying from each companion (X, Y, Z), that would count as 30 Hadiths.
Moreover, there are different Sayings that share the same chain of narrators, and there are as many narrators who repeatedly appear in different chains of narrators; this means that by studying just one narrator (suppose this narrator (A) is a liar), whenever Al-Bukhari sports A in a chain of narrators, he would instantly drop that particular Hadith without taking him much time at all.
In light of the above, it wasn't impossible for Al-Bukhari to accomplish that feat within 16 years, and it would seem he had plenty of time, from that 16 years, to do other activities as well.
