"Brace yourselves, Hatun's coming!"
At the start of the Russo-Ottoman War of 1877, the Russian troops seized Fort Aziziye in Erzurum after defeating the Ottoman soldiers protecting it. In those faithful days, an Ottoman lady, mother of two, had lost her only brother after which she swore revenge. With her brother's rifle on one hand, and a hatchet on the other, Nene Hatun, alongside the civilians of Erzurum, most of whom were women and elderly, headed for Aziziye fort to kick the Russians out. Hatun and the civilians fought bravely as they managed to breach the fort and recapture it while costing the Russians a shameful defeat, and an estimate of 2,000 soldiers.
