The bell rang and the class spilled out of the room, walking eagerly out towards freedom, leaving Trinity, Mrs. Cliff, James, and I remaining. The only sound remaining was the hum of the air conditioner and the tap of James foot as we put our stuff together.
I took my time organizing my pencils and pens in their case and slipping them into my bag, dreading the moment I would have to turn around. Was it possible he wouldn't recognize me?
"You can head out, Mrs. Cliff," James said. "I'll handle this."
She gave him a respectful nod and left the room, tucking her tan leather bag over her shoulder and closing the door softly behind her. Trinity walked to his desk confidently while I trudged forward behind her, head down. We were still standing in the center aisle, meaning that I could sort of stand directly behind her, while still following orders.
"Ladies, that was entirely inappropriate, and disrespectful to Mrs. Cliff," he threatened, glancing from Trinity to me unsparingly.
"We're sorry sir," Trinity said fervently, blocking me to the best of her ability. "We know we're in the wrong here. It won't happen again."
He seemed mollified at that, voice thawing immediately and shoulders relaxing.
"I'm glad to hear it. You're free to go, but I don't want to see that kind of behavior again," he added seriously.
"You won't!" Trinity confirmed. She turned the corner of the desk and walked towards the door, forcing me to take a step closer to him and follow her.
"Do you agree with your friend, young lady?" James asked sternly. I nodded, eyes on my pristine black vans.
"Use your voice," he said. His voice became gentler, thinking that I was shy.
"Yes, sir," I whispered, sparing a glance up to see his face. His eyes widened and his jaw went slack as recognition lit his features.
"Adeline?" he asked, making me cringe. I nodded, looking at Trinity with panic.
"Well, I better give you guys some time to catch up," she said, slipping out of the door with a covert wink in my direction.
F*ck my best friend.
