"Third time this week, twentieth time this month and seventy-fifth time this school year, mr Parker," the principal sums up. "And here we are again. Care to explain what it is this time that made you come late?"
"I- I just overslept, my uh my alarm didn't go off this morning," Peter lies, obviously.
"Just like all the other seventy-four times..." he sighs, sitting down at his desk. "Is there something going on at home maybe? Something you want to talk about?"
Peter shakes his head, trying hard to think of something to get himself out of the situation. "No, sir."
"It's completely normal to oversleep once in a while, but this can't be a coincidence. Whether it's not feeling like going, doing other things, something at home, or problems with classmates, this needs to be solved. If you don't get your attendance rate up, I can't let you pass this year, Parker," he says. "So, I suggest we have a talk with you parents to discuss the situation."
Peter's now in full on panic mode. He isn't worried about his parents getting mad or anything, no, the case is that no one can know who his parents are. It's a carefully kept secret and they'd like to keep it that way for at least one more year. "That- that really isn't necessary, mr Morita. I promise I won't be late or skip class ever again."
"And I'm supposed to take you up on that? The same promise you've broken about 75 times?" he asks Peter, who's looking at the floor. "You've had enough chances to prove yourself, it's time to face the consequences."
With that being said he stands up and walks to the door. "Wait here, I'm just going to get your forms from the office."
The door closes and Peter's left alone with his panicing thoughts. His parents gave up fake names as Peter's legal guardians, mr and mrs Parker, they never thought they'd actually ever had to go down to the school or anything. That might've been a ignorant assumption, but they just never though their angel of a son would do anything that'd get him in trouble enough to get them down to the principal's office.
"Alright, let's see," principal Morita says, as he walks in with Peter's file in hand.
While the principal's settling himself behind his desk again to look for Peter's parents' contact information, Peter's desperately trying to think of an escape plan. Maybe he could set off the fire alarm, or fake a heart attack so instead of his parents the emergency line'd be called. Though, the obvious flaw in this plan is that in the end he'd get in trouble anyway and his parents will be called no matter the outcome of the situation.
The principal picks up the phone from his desk and dials a number, which Peter knows must be either his dad's or mom's number. "Good afternoon, mr Parker," Morita says. "This is principal Morita from Midtown high school, I'm calling regarding your son, Peter."
Peter can't hear what his dad's response is, he can only assume that he must not be too thrilled with this call. After all, Peter has promised them, in order to keep his parental secret a secret, he'd stay out of trouble at school. No fighting, no skipping class, no forgetting homework. Just stay low-key, that's it.
"No, no, he didn't get into a fight, I'm actually calling to request you and mrs Parker to come over to discuss a serious issue concerning your son's attendance rate," the principal says.
At this very moment Peter wishes he could just vanish and return when all is well again. The principal nods at something mr Parker says. "I see, I see, well we really do need you to come over, mr Parker. If nothing will be done about Peter's attendance rate, I can't let him pass this year, or let him even stay at this school, so- ... Alright, yeah ... yes, that's fine ... Okay, see you in a bit then." he hangs up and turns back to Peter. "They'll be here soon, in the meantime you can wait outside in the hallway while I take care of a few things, alright."
