Living alone can sometimes be the most peaceful thing in the world. It's quiet, but the earth has a special way of making its own background noise. It's more comforting. Hearing the birds sing. The trees rustle. Your own footsteps along creeking floor boards. This is how life is for one Cole Cassidy. After all, who wouldn't want some peace after losing everything you love...
Cole grunted after chopping another piece of wood. The axe tumbled into the snow. Cole sniffled as the cold wind hit his nose. He glared up at the beautiful view from the top of the mountain. Then raised his bandana over his nose for warmth and loaded another log up to be cut. Lifting the axe Cole took a deep breath and let the axe fall onto the log. The log split in half making a satisfying thud as each half hit the ground. The wind started to pick up. Cole looked up again at the mountains across the horizon. Dark clouds started to brew covering the peaks. The wind whistled in his ear.
"A storm." He whispered softly.
Quickly he began gathering all the cut logs onto a pair of ropes. He tied the logs together and walked back to his cabin. The door creeked open as he entered. He stomped the snow from his boots before taking them off. The floor was cold. Cole set the logs down by a dark fire place. Small embers rested on top a pile of ashes. Cole blew at them trying to start the fore back up. As it started to grow he threw a log in the fire place. Soon it caught the flame. He threw in two more logs and let the fire grow. It crackled softly. Cole sighed looking out the stained window. A Blizzard😏 was starting to form. Cole looked around for something to do now that he couldn't continue his work outside. He looked towards his wood pile hoping it was enough to last him. The wind howled louder and louder.
"This storm could go on for days."
Cole started some coffee and leaned over his kitchen counter. He sipped his coffee delicately as he watch the storm outside. Hours went by. The sun went down. Cole watched some TV as he waited for the storm to end. He heard soft thuds from outside. The wind blew debris at his house. Cole shook his head knowing his house would need to be fixed up after the storm was done. He grabbed a whiskey bottle from the side table and poured himself a glass. Sipping the hard liquor Cole watched the weather report on TV. The storm was only getting worse, but Cole continued to wait it out.
Another day passed and the storm was finally over. Cole had sensed that many outside parts of his cabin might have been damaged. He put on a coat and gloves to inspect the damage. A deep layer of snow scattered the ground and trees. Suddenly Cole heard growling and thudding coming from the other side of the cabin. He trotted through the snow to around the side of the house. As he turned the corner the growling started to get louder. Cole stopped a bit in shock. He kept a firm hand on his holster. He thought he'd never have to use a gun again. He could tell that the back deck had been severely damaged. Most of it had broken down from the storm. He walked around the side more. Slowly he began to see movement. Then a wolf came into view. Cole pulled his gun out and walked closer. The wolf growled and shuffled around. But it wasn't any wolf. This wolf had dark fur and was very large. It was nearly twice his size. Cole stared in shock holding his gun shakily on both hands. He pointed the gun at the wolf. Cole gasped for breath. He'd never seen a wolf so big before. It growled at him and pawed at the ground. Cole looked down to see that the deck had landed on top of one of the wolves back legs. It was stuck. The wolf continued to growl, but suddenly whimpered and tried to lock its foot, but it was no use. It couldn't escape. Cole didn't know what to do.
