Cole stared into the wolfs eyes. The wolf looked back baring its teeth, but its eyes looked sad. They looked like they were in lots of pain. Cole looked towards the deck that had landed on the wolfs foot. Then he looked back up and took a step closer. The wolf growled louder. Cole put one hand out trying to calm the wolf down. The wolf still growled. Cole stopped and put his gun down. Then he held out both of his hands to show the wolf he was unarmed. He took another step closer. The wolf stared him down, but was no longer growling. Cole got closer and closer. He made his way towards the broken end of the deck. First he inspected the damage. He still kept his glance towards the wolf hoping it wouldn't jump on him. Each plank of the deck would need to be removed. Cole tried to pry a board off, but it was nailed in tightly. He looked around. The handle of his shovel was sticking out of the snow by a tree in the distance. He ran and grabbed it. The wolf growled a bit before letting Cole return with the shovel.
"I'm gonna help you, ok?" Cole said holding one hand up.
The wolf stopped growling again and let Cole by. He wedged the head of the shovel under one of the boards and pushed down to pry it off. It creeked, loosened, and popped out tumbling to the ground. Cole began digging out some of the snow around the wolfs paw to try and make more room for it to come out. The wolf tried to pull its paw out again, but it was still stuck. Cole began trying to pry another board off. The next one was tighter, but soon got the board to pop out. The wolf tugged again. Still stuck. Cole attempted one last board. As soon as it popped out the wolf was quick to try and escape. It whipered in pain as it tried to move its foot. Suddenly it had been released! The wolf quickly tried to crawl away, but it couldn't walk.
"Woah woah there!" Cole said trying to stop the wolf from moving.
The wolf barked almost annoyed at Cole, but the pain was too much. It whimpered and layed back down in the snow. Cole put his hand out and made shushing sounds getting closer to the wolf. It growled again before letting him come over. Cole kneeled down towards the hurt paw and gently touched it. The wolf tensed in pain, but let Cole touch it. He gently tried to move the paw. He felt no muscles tense around it. The wolf had broken its paw. Cole was more shocked by the fact that the paw was bigger than his own hand.
"I'll be back, ok?"
The wolf cried a bit in pain. Cole ran around and back inside. His hands shaking. He looked around desperately trying to think of something to do. He grabbed some old garments and ripped them into bandages. Then grabbed a splint from the kindling box. Cole ran back around the house. The wolf was still lying down. It perked its head up when Cole came back around the side of the cabin. He knelt down beside the wolfs paw again frantically unraveling the cloth bandage. He gently lifted the wolfs paw to the splint and slowly wrapped the cloth around its leg. It growled a bit in pain. It growled louder as Cole began tightening the bandage.
"I-it's ok! It's ok." He said trying to calm the wolf.
It stopped almost like the wolf understood him. It suddenly gritted its teeth in pain....like a human would. Cole gasped as he finished tying the wolfs leg and took a few steps back.
"C-can you understand me?"
The wolf tilted its head down still locking its eyes on Cole. Then nodded slowly. Cole stared in awe.
"How is that possible?!"
The wolf looked away almost ashamed. Cole sighed and went back inside to grab a blanket. He tied ropes to the end of it and brought it back outside.
"Here." Cole said. "Lay on this."
The wolf began slowly moving to the blanket. Most of its body sat on top of it. Cole pulled the ropes tied onto the blanket around the other side of the cabin and into a shed. Cole dragged the wolf to the center of the shed and closed the doors. In a box was another blanket that Cole placed over the wolf.
"Rest up. Stay warm."
"Thankyou." Said a deep voice.
Cole stared at the wolf shocked and backed up to the doors of the shed in terror.
"Y-you can speak?!" Cole exclaimed taking deep breaths.
"Indeed."
"What the hell are you?!!" Cole said with fear in his voice.
"None of your concern. I'll rest and be on my way." The wolf said deeply.
Cole looked down at the wrapped paw.
"You're not going anywhere far with a broken leg." Cole said.
The wolf sighed with closed lips and looked down.
"You should have left me." The wolf said softly.
"What?"
"You should have just left me to die."
"Why would I do that?"
"I'm not worth saving. You don't even know me. I'm dangerous."
"Didn't you thank me a minute ago?" Cole asked.
"While I'm grateful there was no need to help me."
"You got a name?"
"H-Hanzo."
"Hanzo. I'm Cassidy. Cole Cassidy."
"I've been alone for a long time Cole Cassidy." Hanzo said.
"That makes two of us sir. I haven't been in contact with many intelligent beings in a long time."
Hanzo scoffed then coughed hard.
"The storm took me by surprise. I really thought I was dead when your building fell on me."
"You'll be safe now." Cole said. "Do you like soup?"
