Chapter 04- Part 02

By the time seven o'clock rolled in, I was one of the last people remaining at the police station. Eleven hours of continuous work later, I could proudly announce that I was halfway through the pile. Although I wanted to leave as little work as possible for tomorrow, I was completely beat. My back ached. My neck felt like a plank of wood. I could barely look at my computer screen without seeing blotches all over the screen. My RSI was picking up as well. Simply put, my whole body was screaming at me to stop.

I had managed to get a thirty minute break when detective Campbell showed up to take back the rest of his belongings. i managed to earn myself a break under the guise of helping detective Campbell pack his things. I did say I wouldn't be of help, but I couldn't pass up on the opportunity when it was presented.

While helping the detective to move his things to his car, we had talked about a lot of things. He explained about how the investigation will carry on, which resulted in another argument about how he was going to be a better leader than anybody who was going to be appointed (to which detective Campbell promptly disagreed),and about how we will have to balance this case and any other cases that will come our way during this time. one thing let to the other until our conversation was solely about Ivaan. my exhaustion melted away as we continued to talk about Ivaan and his mischief. But the moment detective Campbell left and I got back to work, the fatigue crawled back into my body. and now, I was beat.

Giving in to the pain, I stood up, stretching. The cracking of all the pressure built up between my bones was satisfying to say the least. The relief I felt was heavenly.

After gathering all my personal belongings and my car keys, I stepped out into the chilly night.

Once in the car, I keyed the ignition and hit the road. On the way home, I stopped by the convenience store to grab Ivaan's favorite chocolate- hazelnut milk chocolate. Personally, I was not a fan of nuts in chocolate, or anything in chocolate for that matter. How could you taste the chocolate if there are nuts and pieces of dried fruit at every bite? But, I would do anything for Ivaan, and if he wants nuts in his chocolate, I would gladly get him just that.

I spent the rest of the way home thinking of how happy Ivaan was going to be once he sees that I held up my side of the promise. Ten minutes later, I was backing into our garage.

I hopped out of the car, my paraphernalia and Ivaan's chocolate in hand. Humming an old tune that I couldn't remember the name to, I strutted up the stairs to the porch and unlock the door.

As I opened the door, the sight that greeted me was something that I was praying I would not have to witness.

My mind came to a halt. the humming had long stopped. Ivaan's chocolate slipped out of my fingers and fell to the ground, it's importance gone the moment I laid my eyes on Pa.

♧♧♧

Apologies for the short chapter. I wanted to end it with a cliffhanger *insert evil laugh*, but I couldn't think of any way to drag the the rest of it. This also isn't the best chapter I've written. I'm not satisfied with it at all, but hopefully the story will be back to its normal length and quality next week.

On a different note, does anybody else not like nuts and dried fruit on their chocolate? I know I don't.

Tune in next week to find out what happened so much so that Drithi let go of the precious bar of chocolate!
