I didn't notice it was already past noon until two detectives showed up, asking for me.
"Which one of you is detective Sharma?" asked the taller of the two detectives. He looked like he was in his mid forties. For a second, I hesitated to stand up, taken aback by his imposing demeanour and massive stature. But then, I remembered what they were here for.
"That would be me, sir," I replied, standing up, my momentary fear, long forgotten.
The taller detective walked up to me and introduced himself as detective Mitchell Sanders and held out his hand. I shook it and turned towards the second detective. He looked much younger than detective Sanders. Maybe in his thirties. He, too, had a stoic and domineering aura, but compared to detective Sanders, he looked much more inviting. He introduced himself as Detective Tyler Addams, and we shook hands.
"I heard about your predicament from Chief Bryson. Typically, any officer or detective involved in a case in any way besides being assigned to it is not allowed to take part in the investigation. So, may I know what makes you the exception?" Detective Sanders questioned, instead of beating around the bush.
When I didn't answer him instantly, he let out a slight smirk. "I thought so," he said, addressing my silence, "do us a favour and stand out of this investigation. That's for the best for all of us. Just give us the address of the crime scene. The two of us will head over there."
He was right. There was no doubt about it. Typically, I wouldn't be allowed to take part in the case in any shape or form. But I needed to take part in it. Ivaan's life was in danger, just like every other kid's. knowing that, I could not even think to bring myself to just idle around doing nothing. I refused to idle around doing nothing. Just as the two officers turned around, words found their way into my mouth.
"Because I want to."
"What did you say?" detective-in-training Sanders turned towards me. Detective Addams looked at me, wide-eyed, amused at my retaliation.
"Because I want to," I repeated, "my nephew was kidnapped, and I want to make sure he comes back safe and sound." It was a weak retort, but it was the truth.
"This is precisely why you shouldn't be allowed. Your emotions will get in the way of the investigation. do us a favour and stay out of it," detective Sanders said, harsher this time.
