Abiteth withdrew slowly, watching him intently. His eyes were wider than usual, lips parted - but other than that, he did a damn good job at hiding how much or how little the name had affected him.
When he exhaled, though, she saw a flicker of blue flames. She straightened, drawing her hands away from him. He casually draped both of his arms over the back of the couch, rolling his neck. Abiteth twirled a strand of hair around her fingers.
"Sound familiar, Dabi?"
"Todoroki does," he said harshly, clenching flexing his hands, "I'm pretty sure that's th' same last name as Endeavor."
'Can't keep your familiarity with the name out of your tone... I wonder,' she tapped a finger to the side of her mouth, looking at him from the left, then the right. The rasp in his voice didn't help his case.
Calling him Touya had struck a nerve.
Smiling cheerily at him, Abiteth flounced around, sashaying cutely toward the desk by her door - her computer desk. Really, she should move it into her office, because really, she didn't need a journaling and crafts desk in her room plus a computer desk.
"You say Todoroki like it's familiar to you, Dabi."
"You think so?" fabric rustled; the springs in the couch groaned as Dabi stood.
"I hear so," she replied, gesturing to her ears. She listened as his soft footsteps drew ever closer, "and now, you sound closer."
"Oh~ Observant as always," he leaned over her, body pressed close. Again, when he exhaled, there was an intense heat accompanied by a flicker of blue flames. His chest was heavy against her back.
"Why'd you invite me over, Abi?"
She pushed back against him, thoughts skimming over the various answers she had to that question.
"It doesn't seem smart," he continued.
"You say that like there's something else about you that I should know, but don't."
"Maybe there is," he tone was soft - vulnerable, in a way, and Abiteth's brows furrowed in both concern and trepidation. That wasn't a tone she heard him use all too often.
If the reports that Ersatz had given her were true, and Dabi was a Todoroki, Abiteth knew she would question Enji. He had become a hero that she looked up to in recent years - could she really continue to work beside him if Dabi was Touya? Especially since he was surprisingly kind, and concerned for the well-being of any heroes who worked alongside him, particularly his sidekicks. Was that not a kindness that he extended to his family?
Dabi being Touya Todoroki would shake the foundation Enji had built himself up on. And Abiteth herself had experience with family looking different from the outside versus the inside - because from the outside, her family would appear cold, distant, and disinterested. From the outside, it could be assumed that Abiteth's parents simply didn't love her.
"Then why don't you tell me?" she murmured, forcing herself out of her thoughts. She turned her head in an attempt to look at Dabi, but he nudged her with his forehead, preventing her from looking at him.
"You wouldn't believe me."
Before Abiteth had the opportunity to respond, Dabi's lips skimmed the skin between her neck and shoulder; his tongue followed, wetting her neck before he bit her hard enough to break her skin. She swallowed thickly and exhaled heavily. A furious blush rose to her cheeks. It was all she could do to stop the hydrangeas from blooming right then and there, excited ruffles darting down her thigh beneath her stockings.
