New Eyes

If I could have just one wish,
I would ask for a new pair of eyes.
That way I can have a new point of view.
The reflection staring back at me isn't what I wish to see.
The walls surrounding me feel like a cage.
The invisible weight I carry is breaking my back.
Arms wrapped around me, but they're my own.
A smile is plastered on my face,
Yet there's sorrow hiding behind it.
I wish I could see something else,
Another me.
The one who's back doesn't break for those who step on me.
The me who doesn't want to hide their skin.
A version of myself that doesn't question my worth.
I want to see happiness in my eyes when I stare into the camera.
My new vision would be full of colors,
Giving off an aura of belonging and love.
They say "I wish you could see yourself through my eyes";
I want to love myself through my own eyes.
I want my reality to be better than my dreams.
When I stare into the mirror, I stare back at only myself and remember that I'm alone.
My family is on the outside of my window,
The one with a lock on it.
No, I don't have access to the key;
My hands are taped over my mouth.
Key nowhere in sight,
I watch as the leaves fly away in the breeze.
The tv is on but all I see is static,
There's no remote to change the channel.
Turn the lights off, please,
there's nothing worth seeing anyways.
I close my eyes.
What do I see,
None other than the version of me I aspire to be.
So yes,
If I could have just one wish,
I would ask for a new pair of eyes.
