"Uncle Alex!" Ellis screamed
"Ellie? What's wrong?" He asked as he ran into the room
"Mommy isn't waking up" The girl whimpered
"Mer? Mer!" Alex tried himself "Ellie, go downstairs now" He ordered
"No! I'm not leaving mommy!"
"Ellie, go downstairs and tell your siblings to get ready, we're going to the hospital!" Alex said sternly
The girl ran out of the room while Alex checked her pulse. It was slow but steady. He let her sit up a bit more and tried again to wake her up. He quickly called 911 so they'd send an ambulance
"Mer, dammit. Wake up" Alex started to panic and carried her downstairs to the couch
"Uncle Alex? What's wrong with mommy?" Zola quietly asked as she entered the room
"Zozo, wait in the playroom with your siblings please. It will be okay" Alex tried to comfort them
"Okay" He heard the girl's voice crack and he could hear her talking to her siblings
Alex held Meredith's hand until the paramedics finally ran inside
"What happened?" The female paramedic asked
"She's been diagnosed with lymph node cancer. She's been receiving radiation and chemo. I don't know what's wrong" Alex explained "Do you have her? I need to check on her kids-"
"Go. We're gonna bring your wife to the hospital now" The paramedic spoke up as they loaded her onto a stretcher
"She's not my wife" Alex quickly said before he brushed some hairs out of Meredith's face and ran to the kids
"Is mommy okay?" Bailey immediately asked
"They're bringing mommy to the hospital. Let's go, we're going as well" He lifted Ellis into his arms and held Bailey's hand
They watched as the paramedics wheeled Meredith out of the house
"Let's get into the car" Alex helped them get buckled in and drove off. He parked the car and got the kids out again
"Will mommy be okay?" Zola asked him
"I don't know, Zo" Alex replied
"Is mommy in pain?" Bailey then asked
"The doctors will help with that, buddy" Alex tried to assure the boy
"Mommy will be scared" Ellis whimpered in Alex' arms
"Let's go hear how she's doing" He sighed. His heart broke as those kids kept asking him questions
As Alex walked into the emergency room he noticed people looked at him and the kids with pity
"Alex!" Jo ran towards him "What happened?"
"Can you take the kids? I wanna go check on her" He asked his wife
"Of course" Jo smiled at the kids and lifted Ellis into her arms "Let's go get us some ice cream before you can see mommy" Jo smiled and took them to the cafeteria
Alex ran towards the examination room where they were examining Meredith
"Alex-" Richard breathed
"How is she?" He got choked up
"We're placing a central line" Bailey sighed
"Shh, Mer. I'm here. The kids are with Jo now" Alex held her head in his hands
"She's unresponsive" Bailey rubbed Alex' back
"Is she having an infection?" He asked when he was unable to hold back the tears
"No. She just tired herself out" Bailey replied "But she's now vulnerable for infections"
"Stubborn woman" Alex breathed
"She's a mother. They are her number one priority" Bailey explained
"I get that! But everyone is trying to help her out, she's of no use if she ends up in the hospital" Alex sighed

They had brought Meredith to a room. She was still asleep as she was receiving lots of medication to reduce the chance of an infection.
"I want mommy to wake up" Ellis whimpered from her spot in Alex' arms
"She'll wake up soon" Bailey promised his sister
"Bailey's right, honey. Mommy will be awake soon" Alex kissed the little girl's dirty blonde hair
"We love you, mommy" Zola kissed Meredith's hand
They sat like that for a bit longer, the kids refused to play
"I wish daddy was here" Zola whispered
"I know, Zo" Alex breathed and hugged the girl
"Hmm" They heard Meredith groan as she finally woke up
"Mommy!" The kids screamed
"W-What happened?" Meredith weakly asked, unable to open her eyes for a little while longer
"Shh, you're in the hospital. We couldn't wake you up" Alex ran his hand over her hand
"Sorry" Meredith muttered "Hi guys" She forced a smile on her face as she looked at her kids
"Mommy" Bailey breathed and hugged his mom
"Hi sweeties" Meredith breathed as they cuddled up around her
"Were you scared?" Ellis quietly asked
"No, honey. I was surrounded by friends and family" Meredith kissed Ellis head "I just kept thinking about you guys and daddy, then I'm never scared"
"I do the same" Zola quietly admitted and felt her mother squeezing her hand
"I was really scared" Ellis quietly whimpered
"I'm so sorry, honey. I'm so sorry for scaring you" Meredith wrapped her arm tighter around Ellis who started crying even harder "Shh, baby"
"It's okay, Ellie" Bailey hugged his sister tight, followed by Zola joining them in the hug
"I love you guys so so much" Meredith breathed and hugged them in her arms
"Love you too mommy" The kids breathed

Missing piece
Fanfictionit's been almost nine years since Derek died. Meredith and the kids miss him a lot. Close to the anniversary Meredith has been feeling ill. Is it just because she misses him and being busy with three kids or is there something else going on?
