"Mama, look!" Ellis giggled and showed something on the tv screen
"Hmm.." Meredith looked up despite the exhaustion she felt but she didn't even have the chance anymore as she felt her eyes closing
"I want that!" Ellis pointed out and then saw her mother had already fallen asleep and the little girl sighed. Her siblings were doing some homework at the table with Alex. She quietly cuddled closer in her mother's arms and clutched her mother's sweater in her tiny fist
A while later Dr Bailey entered the room and smiled at the older kids that looked up from making their homework
"Hi" They both giggled
"Hi guys. Is uncle Alex helping you two with homework?" Miranda asked as she checked on them
"Yes. But it's math, that's easy" Zola smiled and looked back down and continued writing
"You're just too smart" Alex chuckled and watched as also Bailey looked down and continued writing again
"How is she?" Miranda asked, referring to Meredith who was still asleep in the big hospital bed
"She's been awake for just a few minutes. She's sleeping constantly" He quietly said to not worry the kids. He stood up and walked towards Meredith bed, the oldest two kids continued making their homework in silence
"Hmm.." Bailey looked at Meredith's heartbeat that was projected on the machine. It was too slow to her liking but nothing too concerning yet but she definitely wanted to keep an eye on it
"Way too slow" Alex whispered and saw Miranda nodding in agreement
"Can you take Ellis for a moment? I wanna check Meredith out completely" Miranda asked Alex
Alex wanted to lift the girl in his arms when he noticed she was awake and refused to let go of her mother, letting go of a high pitched squeal
"Ellie, come here for a moment, please. Dr Bailey has to check out mommy" He said while brushing some hairs out of her face and then noticed the tears that were streaming down her little face, leaving strains on her pink cheeks. Meredith's blanket was clearly wet from the amount of tears
"No!" Ellis yelled again, clearly upset by everything that was happening
"Hmm" They heard Meredith stir just the slightest bit but she didn't wake up
"I wanna play with mommy!" Ellis pouted
"I know, sweetheart.." Alex sighed "Come here, please" He stretched out his moment but it took the girl a while before she slowly gave in. Alex carried her to her siblings to check on them but the girl got hysterical as Alex stepped further away from her mom
"No! Let me go! Mommy! Mommy!" Ellis started kicking him in a try that he'd let go of her
"Shh for mommy" Alex tried but Meredith didn't even move an inch. He sat the girl down on the foot end while Miranda was checking out his best friend
Ellis seemed to be desperate to hold onto her mom as she quickly reached out to clutch onto her mother's leg that was covered by a mountain of blankets
"No! Let go!" Ellis screamed as Alex lifted her again
"Hey, I'm just helping you lay down again" Alex sighed, not knowing how to deal with Ellis' behaviour
The little girl let her uncle help her and clutched her mother again, scared to be seperated from her
"How is she?" Alex quietly asked Miranda
"Alex.. She's not doing well, the chemo has been a lot of her body" Bailey sighed
"But the feeding tube- It must have helped her, no?" He frowned, suddenly forgetting all his medical knowledge
"It will definitely have helped her, but her body needs rest. I'm glad she's here so we can monitor her, I really didn't feel comfortable with letting her go home" Bailey sighed
"No. It's definitely the best choice to keep her here" Alex nodded
"Uncle Alex?" Zola spoke up "Can we go to the playground?"
"I'll see if aunt Amelia or Maggie can take you" Alex nodded his head
"Don't you wanna come? You're the best at playing soccer" Bailey smiled
"And what if uncle Winston and aunt Maggie take you two? I know he plays even better than me" Alex winked, really not wanting to leave Meredith alone
"Okay" Bailey nodded
"I'll go get them" Miranda nodded and left the room
"Let's get you guys ready" Alex smiled and helped the kids get ready "Ellis? Do you wanna put on your shoes, please?"
"No. Don't wanna go" She whispered
"Can you put on your pajamas then?" Alex asked the girl "But first a shower" He reminded her
Maggie and Winston came to get the kids and Ellis was taking a shower when Meredith started stirring
"Hey" Alex stroke his hand over her arm
"Aww" Meredith winced as she tried to turn slightly
"Shh. Are you okay now?" He asked as he helped her reposition, careful to not hurt her
"Yeah.." She weakly nodded "How are the kids?"
"Maggie and Winston took Zola and Bailey to the playground. Bailey wanted to play soccer" Alex chuckled "And Ellis is taking a shower, she wanted to stay here" He softly smiled and adjusted the blankets that were covering her body
"Is she almost finished?" Meredith asked and heard that the water had stopped running
"She'll be back in a few minutes" Alex nodded
"Wanna stay awake" Meredith whispered but felt her body protesting
"Uncle Alex? Can you help me brush my hair?" He heard Ellis ask
"Send her here. I'll do it" Meredith weakly said
"Come here, El. Grab your brush and come here" Alex softly replied
"I'm here" Ellis quietly said as she walked back into the room
"Hi honey" Meredith weakly whispered
"Mama!" Ellis gasped and quickly climbed up the bed
"Alex, can you help me sit up a bit?" Meredith asked and Alex did as she asked "I'm gonna brush your hair if that's okay"
"Yes." Ellis widely smiled, glad to spend some time with her mom
Meredith weakly held the brush in her hand and slowly went through the girl's hair but she noticed her hand was too weak to keep a grip on it so it slipped out of her hand and she was fighting the tears
"It's okay" Alex whispered and put his hand over Meredith's and brushed Ellis' hair until it was completely untangled
"Thank you" Ellis smiled and turned around, cuddling into her mother's body, resting her head on Meredith's chest
"Mm.. I love you" Meredith whispered but was barely awake
"Can we play with my dolls?" Ellis sheepily asked
"Wait a bit, sweety" Alex rubbed Ellis' back "Maybe you and mommy should watch some tv" He suggested and turned on the tv
"Hmm" Meredith groaned at the sudden noise
"Sorry" Alex rubbed her arm
"Look mommy! My favourite show!" Ellis giggled and saw her mother's eyes had slowly closed again
"Hmm.." Meredith muttered, unable to stay awake
Alex sighed. He saw Ellis tearing up almost immediately. He rubbed Ellis' back in a try to calm the girl down when the machines suddenly started beeping
Alex immediately checked the machines, seeing her heart rate was drastically low
"Mama? Mama!" Ellis started screaming when several nurses ran inside
"Page Bailey and Teddy Altman. She needs an EKG!" Alex screamed. Her heart rate was slightly going higher again but still to slow to his own liking
